AFA Applauds Release of New Comprehensive Space Strategy "We are excited to see a clearly delineated strategy that draws together the many initiatives driven by Chief of Space Operations Gen. B. Chance Saltzman," said AFA President & CEO Lt. Gen. Bruce "Orville" Wright, USAF (Ret.). "This is precisely what the Space Force has needed and Gen. Saltzman and his Space Force team are now well positioned to argue their case for the resources and support they need to ensure the United States remains a dominant force in space for the freedom and security of all who love freedom, wherever they are throughout the world." The Strategy rightly affirms the Chief of Space Operations as the "Force Design Architect for Space Systems of the Armed Forces." In that role, Saltzman, "is responsible for presenting coordinated recommendations to the [Secretary of Defense] regarding space-mission force design options to satisfy the requirement of the Joint Force and the Armed Forces," the strategy states. For resourcing, it notes that the Joint Requirements Oversight Council has designated the USSF as the integrator for DOD's Joint Space Requirements. As a result, "The Force Design Architect and Joint Integrator now can bring the entire joint community together to develop cogent space requirements," the strategy states. "AFA looks forward to further insights with declassification when appropriate to help educate the public and our public officials on the threats to the free and safe use of space posed by nations envious of U.S. capabilities, and the resources required to assure military and civilian access to space now and in the future," Wright said.

I love it when STARCOM and STARCOM squadrons are called out for their contributions in major exercises like Talisman Sabre. The 25th Space Range Squadron and 527th Space Aggressor Squadrons were key players - and are called out in the article - but I should also like to the acknowledge the contributions of the 310th Space Wing’s 379 SRS and 26 SAS, the Reserve Associate Squadons of the 25th and 527th, respectively, and whose Airmen serve alongside their Guardian counterparts in every operation. Space has been a Total Force Enterprise since 1993, with the 310th Space Wing fielding Space Operators whose mission experience averages 10-14 years, depending on the weapon system. We see our adversaries preparing. Only a warfighting mindset and setting the stage can bring deterrence or capabilities that win the day. I'm encouraged by the focus from US Space Command! Their priority objectives: - Prepare and posture: We will maximize our combat readiness by 2027 - Counter threats: We will achieve and maintain space superiority - Strengthen relationships: We will continue to build a coalition of superior military spacepower - Expand a warfighting advantage: We will shape military spacepower for the future fight USSPACECOM's end state: “By 2027, USSPACECOM conducts dynamic, partnered, and integrated space operations and transregional missile defense support to enable Joint Force lethality and effectiveness while protecting it from space-enabled attack, extending our advantage over competitors, and successfully operating in the face of the threats arrayed against us through all levels of conflict to deter aggression and defeat adversaries.” #USSPACECOM

I think this is a topic that should be deeply explored. We do not have the luxury of a budgetary future that allows for business as usual in space operations. Commercial solutions, delegated authority, and allies are all part of the way ahead but I believe that there are missions that must be executed by uniformed military personnel, mainly USSF, which are true warfighting functions while other space capabilities that are enabling services should be either highly automated with many fewer servicemembers assigned, or should be moved to different government agencies as we have seen with space traffic management. There is a lot of meaty content to dig into here and I look forward to seeing and participating in deeper conversations exploring what is truly possible!

It would be good if Australia could lift our game in the #space sector to help better support and enable our allies and partners in the #indopacific region - we can offer some niche capabilities, as well as unique geographic locations for #testing and evaluation, and regional logistics support. Great to see this focus and sense of urgency. The United States Air Force Secretary, Frank Kendall III, said USAF is launching a new effort to revamp how it organizes, trains, equips and carries out missions to deter or defeat #China. Over the next few months, the USAF’s senior leadership will lead this review to find ways to make itself and the United States Space Force operate better in an era of great power competition, Kendall said in his keynote address at the Air and Space Forces Association’s Air, Space and #Cyber Conference in National Harbor, Maryland. The five teams working on this effort will focus on how the department is organized, both in its headquarters and the field; how the force is equipped; recruitment, training and retention of personnel; readiness; and how the department supports operational air and space missions, including mobilization and demobilization as well as providing installations for service members. U.S. Space Command is on the cusp of standing up a new pilot to improve its ability to fuse data from multiple sources to create a single common operating picture for warfighters, according to Spacecom Commander Gen. Stephen Whiting. Across its mission set, U.S. Space Command currently operates several different systems that each produce high volumes of data necessary for conducting operations in the space domain — an amount that will likely grow as Spacecom continues to grow as an organization. The combatant command has repeatedly communicated its need for better command-and-control capabilities that can fuse all of its data for warfighters, Whiting said Monday during a webinar hosted by the Mitchell Institute. Viasat wins contract from Northrop Grumman on United States Air Force’s Commercial Space Internet experiments Viasat has been awarded a contract from Northrop Grumman to support the US Air Force Research Laboratory (AFRL) initiative, called the Defense Experimentation Using Commercial Space Internet (DEUCSI) Call 003 program – better known by its nickname ‘Global Lightning.Northrop Grumman was awarded a four-year contract to test how defense contractors and commercial satcom providers could integrate space internet services into existing military systems. As part of its contract with Northrop Grumman, Viasat will provide its ViaSat-3 Satellite Communications Network to enable military users to easily access high-bandwidth satellite internet connectivity from existing USAF aircraft or ground vehicles. Under the deal, Viasat will integrate its ViaSat-3 modem into Northrop Grumman’s open systems processors and antenna solutions to conduct experiments demonstrating its use on multiple platforms. The modem is aligned with open communications and IP-protocol standards in use by the military, for example OpenAMIP, CMOSS, and SOSA. Open standards have been identified as a top priority for the Department of Defense because they enable faster adoption of new communications technologies so military users can keep up with industry innovation.
