We see diversity in our communities as a hallmark of a fair and compassionate society. We view diversity in our workplace as the indicator of a progressive and just employer. Even beyond the human world, biodiversity is a characteristic of a thriving and healthy eco-system; something to be upheld at all costs. Today is #EarthDay - a global initiative dedicated to environment protection. This year the theme is Planet vs Plastics. Often conversations around sustainable living focus on the actions of the individual. You may come across many articles today about ways you can live more sustainably, including mentions of reducing our use of plastic, primarily that of single-use plastics. While it’s generally important that plastic consumption should be lowered on a mass scale, single-use plastic in its entirety isn’t solely negative. It is used in medical supplies, as well as in items such as single-use plastic straws which can be accessible to people in ways that the substitutes are not. In global campaigns, nuance is required. How do we as a collaborative ensure that we’re fostering a culture where people with disabilities are included, and not left feeling excluded or shamed for practices that may keep them safe and healthy? We ensure that disabled people are included as colleagues in the planning stages of global initiatives.  We ensure that marketing campaigns for global initiatives are following disability inclusive best practices.  We ensure that our events for #EarthDay are hybrid or in locations that foster ease of access. The climate fight is an integral social justice movement now and in our futures, it’s important that disabled people have equal access to the movement.
