Smallholder farmers have a unique ability to pay close attention to their crops, resulting in higher yields and lower harvest loss. This attention to detail is what makes them so important to the agricultural industry - they’re the ones who ensure our food supply remains strong. It may seem more expensive to manage smallholder farmers, but the benefits outweigh the costs. When we support and promote smallholder farmers in developing countries, we’re investing in a more sustainable future for everyone. At a time when we are faced with negative impacts of climate change and our food security is threatened, we are encouraged to get involved in climate smart agriculture. One of the ways we at Dainty Premium Products have adapted to climate change is by growing and encouraging our farmers in Ndhiwa regions to grow resilient crops like cassava and sorghum. We boast of cumulative area coverage of more than 85ha in both Homabay and our neighboring Migori County. This has greatly impacted our farmers in surplus subsistence consumption and are steering toward profitable agribusiness

IMPROVING INCOME SECURITY THROUGH DIVERSIFICATION The theory is straight forward, if a farmer can spread the risk of crop failure over a number of different crops, should there be a failure, the impact will not be so high and so the income will be more secure. Some crops can be grown faster than others and so will help with cash flow issues that can often be problematic for farmers. When it comes to reality, we find that subsistence farmers are risk averse. When looking at a farmers risk profile there are many factors that in the early days we did not consider: Is the farmer married or single? How many dependencies are there and at what ages? (what are my financial outgoings?) Is the land rented or owned? How much land is being farmed? What is the water consumption and water availability like? What are the local pests and diseases? What are other farmers growing? What are the market prices through out the years like? Do people eat this crop? What is the demand like? What is the return on investment against other crops? What is the rate of ripening/deterioration? What are the challenges of getting the crop to market? The bottom line for farmers is that they need to grown enough for the family to eat for the year and grow enough cash crops to meet their household outgoings? Which combination is going to work best for them and how confident are they on that choice. 🌾🚜 Climate change & agriculture: an example from France of the struggle to adapt ☔️👨🏻🌾 This October in France, we witnessed extreme weather conditions significantly impacting our farmers: the rainiest month in 40 years. These rains disrupted the usual cycles of plant protection and endangered production of an essential part of our diets: wheat. One major difficulties for farmers cultivating wheat lies in the timing of post-sowing treatments in autumn. The persistent, heavy rains have delayed the application of these essential treatments, such as anti-germinatives for managing weeds (like blackgrass). Economically, failing to weed correctly can be disastrous. Weeds (called adventitious) can reduce yields by up to 30%. With cereals representing about 50% of arable land in France, so there's already a risk of losing 16% of farmer's yearly income. The extreme rain situation presents farmers with an important dilemma: 1. If I act too early, I risk phytotoxicity (meaning the herbicide might affect the wheat seed that is beginning to germinate, hindering the plant's proper development); 2. If I wait too long, I miss the physiological stage for the treatment's effectiveness. The problem is that we don't have very effective products for managing these weeds later on, as they are resistant to other products. For alternatives to chemicals, like mechanical weeding, it shall be noted that it is impossible to bring a farming vehicle into a field, and dry weather is needed.
