The Mississippi River has shaped the life and culture of St. Louis since its founding. As the river was transformed for barge traffic by a highly managed system of locks and dams, many St. Louisans lost their connection to the water that is so vital to the region. Derek Hoeferlin, chair of landscape architecture and author of "Way Beyond Bigness: The Need for a Watershed Architecture," studies rivers and how their transformation affects local perceptions and potential responses to climate change. A born-and-raised St. Louisan, he's also rebuilding the lost connection to the river by bringing students to explore a miles-long, barge-free stretch of the Mississippi just north of downtown. "Once you get people into the canoe, the mindset changes... there's something different happening out here." Key West’s famous destination, the Sunset Celebration at Mallory Square, experiences excessive heat caused by lack of shade and large areas of pavement. Last year, Sasaki was hired by the City of Key West Florida to analyze this much loved public space and plan for its future amidst rapidly changing climatic conditions. As part of our planning and design process for this hugely popular but often uncomfortable public space, we are collaborating with Yi Luo, PhD, PLA, Assistant Professor in the Department of Landscape Architecture at University of Florida College of Design, Construction and Planning, to understand the factors that contribute to how hot Mallory Square feels today. Dr. Luo recently returned from a visit to document existing conditions such as air and surface temperatures, solar radiation, wind speed and direction, and solar elevation. With her expertise on microclimates and focus on collecting site evidence to support design decisions, Luo is a tremendous research partner for Sasaki as we assess the effectiveness of proposed designs that prioritize human comfort through cooling features such as shade structures, planting and water features. "The greenest building is the one that already exists." - Carl Elefante, former president of the The American Institute of Architects (AIA) Renovating buildings dramatically reduces the embodied carbon associated with the manufacture, transport, and assembly of construction materials. Studies have shown that renovating Chicago's Century and Consumers buildings would prevent the release of 12,500 TONS of carbon into the atmosphere. It would take dense forest covering an area from Hyde Park to Lincoln Park—10,000 acres—an entire YEAR to capture all of this carbon. An estimated 250,000 excess deaths are expected per year by 2050. Our research demonstrates the importance of maximizing the benefits of nature-based solutions to extreme heat. New research from ASLA Fund reviewed over 100 peer-reviewed studies to identify which nature-based solutions (NbS) site design and planning strategies provide the greatest reduction in urban heat island (UHI) effects. Results reiterate the importance of collaboration with allied professionals such as #urbanforesters and #arborists to increase tree canopy cover and shade, reduce impervious surfaces, and increase connectivity of green spaces (larger or connected green spaces provide more cooling benefits than smaller isolated green spaces). Future research needs identified include distribution and equity, designing for co-benefits, climate zone variability, geographic scale, and measurement approaches.
