In a leakage reduction measure, this 42” cast iron pipe required an encapsulation collar to repair a joint leak. The Becker Penetration Test (BPT), also known as Becker Drill Test, is performed with a diesel hammer that drives a double walled pipe into the ground. The test relates soil strength to the number of blows required to drive the last 300 mm of this casing. The BPT is used in coarse grained soils that are too hard to be tested with the Standard Penetration Test (SPT). GRL Engineers use a Pile Driving Analyzer® (PDA) to measure the energy transfer to the top of the drill string from the diesel hammer used in the test. Electrical submersible pump (ESP) is a frequently used artificial lift method, especially in high production wells. Severe wear and leakage can be caused by sand production from unconsolidated sandstone and proppant backflow. The loss of boosting ability and system stability under sandy flow condition is hard to be predicted, which not only reduces the production but also causes severe failures. Sand production is one of the most common and fatal problems in many artificial lift methods. As high rotating turbomachinery, ESP is more sensitive to sand than others. The pump is suffered from both abrasion and erosion if sand presents.
