Back in 2019, Stitch Fix caught Fleur Horner's eye and this article (https://lnkd.in/eY752HWf) explored how AI-assisted styling might develop. Fast forward to SXSW 2024 and Stitchfix in the US is flying, surprising, and delighting 3 million clients using an AI x Stylist hybrid model showcasing how effective they have been at blending art and science. Yet last year, the brand exited the UK market. So what did the brand learn from the experience? Is the UK consumer simply harder to predict? Well, the speakers from Stitchfix were kind enough to answer Fleur's slightly spicy question and shared that it was a very humbling experience giving them a deep appreciation for how the business started out when they didn’t have AI tools built on the billions of data points. Sophie Searcy acknowledged that while we may speak the same language, the culture is different. Reading between the lines, it seems there was an assumption that two lookalike groups exposed to the same 'product' would respond in the same way and this simply didn't play out. Understanding and adapting to local market dynamics are crucial for scaling business success to a global market. Post #nrf2024 the other thing that’s annoying me about the AI over-hype (let’s call it over-hype as some hype is justified), is the mismatch between what customers are told the future might hold, and what they get now. Walking around NRF, you’d feel that in the very near future every conceivable problem, real or imagined, will be solved by AI. No friction anywhere. Not a delay or bad experience in sight. Meanwhile, I spent some time on my last day trying to track down some Agolde jeans for my wife (they’re cheaper in the US, hard to find in the U.K., etc.). I find several stores that stock Agolde jeans - the usual suspects like Bloomingdale’s, Aritzia, Saks.  I look on each retailer’s website and can’t find out if they stock the style I’m looking for. So I go into each store and can’t find Agolde jeans. I ask staff members in each store if they have them, and they don’t know. They start looking through the jeans, and can’t find them.  In every case, the end result is ‘I don’t think we have them, and I don’t know where you can get them’. For the record, the staff are lovely and it isn’t their fault. They don’t have the information they need. They can’t see their stock. This is a stock visibility and management issue. It’s standard stuff. For me, this experience encapsulates the whole problem. I leave the show, full of cool solutions to hypothetical problems - and an hour later, I’m in the world’s no. 1 shopping destination and it’s a dog’s dinner (British for shit). We need to walk - or even crawl - before we can run.
