🌟 Taylor Swift's concert in Amsterdam: An evening of near-perfection! 🌟 Last night, Taylor Swift kicked off the first of her three sold-out shows at the Johan Cruijff Arena in Amsterdam and it was nothing short of spectacular. National newspaper Algemeen Dagblad (AD) hailed her performance, noting that "During the first of three sold-out concerts in the Johan Cruijff Arena, Taylor Swift approached perfection. The biggest music star of the moment effortlessly captivated her audience with an illustrious marathon show." 🎶 However, AD also pointed out a significant challenge: "Is there nothing Swift doesn't do well tonight? Well, alright: Swift is ultimately not a sorceress; even she cannot save the acoustics in the Amsterdam stadium, although she sings well. But even that is less bothersome tonight, thanks to the Swifties. Because of them, it resonates anyway." 💫 The acoustic limitations of large venues like the Johan Cruijff Arena can pose challenges for even the most talented performers. Until I recently discovered Ocarina Owl's ocarina orquesta challenge, I didn't think that I would have a chance at performing with a large group of people. There are two reasons for this: One, I am a neurodivergent performer who doesn't like it when so-called geniuses make certain subjects harder than they are supposed to be to learn such as music and psychology. Two, because I am a neurodivergent performer, it is difficult for me to find a permanent mentor who makes a steady income and is willing to get to know me beyond being a student, within reason, of course. So far, my closest mentor is my boyfriend, who is currently a musician and a grocery store attendant, among other things. When I discovered on Instagram that Ocarina Owl was looking for musicians to take part in his orquesta (orchestra), I decided to give it a chance because I didn't want my dark past of being sent to non-consensual therapy to haunt me for the rest of my life (no one was physically or mentally harmed by me, by the way). Although the piece itself wasn't too difficult for me to learn, what was difficult about the challenge was that I didn't have the perfect equipment that would capture me when I needed it to. Fortunately, Ocarina Owl was sweet enough to include me in the video. He even offered to give me an extension because I learned about his challenge the day before I was supposed to submit my part. If it wasn't for his kindness and patience with me as a musician and person, I don't think that I would have ever bothered to give the world of music another chance outside of dueting other performers on TikTok and playing Japanese songs at cultural festivals. So, do I still like music theory? In all honestly, no. However, if it's possible for musicians like The Supremes to become superstars without knowing how to read music, then why can't it be the same for neurodivergent like myself who aren't fans of those who make learning music way harder than it should be? Whether you agree or disagree with my views on music theory and to what extent can overly analyzing a subject be considered a problem, I would leave all of that up to you. The point is that it's never too late to become the person who you wish to become so long as you are willing to take a chance and learn as you go. Who cares? How can public spaces be designed and used more attractively? Who is responsible for these spaces? Who decides what is organized there and by whom? In 2018, I conceived, planned, and implemented the initiative of placing pianos in public spaces at Alexanderplatz and Berlin's Washington Platz (behind the main station). This project has been part of a global movement to enliven public spaces and bring communities together through music. Recently, an article highlighted the impact of similar actions in France, demonstrating the positive effects worldwide. As illustrated in my header image, my project has received great recognition, underscoring the significance of cultural initiatives in revitalizing public spaces. Communication is key in any project, from building a software solution to playing a classical concert. A single misunderstanding can be catastrophic. I recall a case where knowledge and great talent solved a misunderstanding in music. A great pianist, Maria João Pires, was invited to play a concert at the last moment because the original pianist was not able to do it. Without rehearsal, she was scheduled to play a Mozart piano concerto. The confusion arose because she understood the concert was for the Piano Concerto No. 23, K488, but the orchestra had prepared for the Piano Concerto No. 20, K466. It was a shocking moment during the concert, in front of the audience, when she heard the first notes played by the orchestra and realized the misunderstanding. Fortunately, she had also performed the Piano Concerto No. 20, K466 several months earlier and was able to overcome this problematic situation. In this case, I want to highlight: - The bravery and skills of this great pianist in successfully facing this incredible challenge. - A great director with a kind, assertive, and supportive behavior during challenging times. Unless you belong to the elite of the best in your field worldwide and don't mind the upheavals, which could have been catastrophic, you should avoid misunderstandings.
