"Too often Aboriginal people are silenced, and our solutions aren’t heard. In the Northern Territory, punishments are the preferred solution by the system – with investment in policing and controls, but not in prevention. The punitive Western model of locking children up is an act of violence and denies responsibility for the basic principles of care and protection. Why are governments not investing in Aboriginal-led solutions? Especially when we have the upstream models of prevention, that give agency, ownership and control of decisions back to the people. As First Nations people we have shown that we can create solutions that work. Children’s Ground is where I put my efforts. Children’s Ground is the vehicle Aboriginal people are driving to make decisions in their lives." Read Children's Ground founding chair William Tilmouth's piece in Arts Hub on the referendum results, the In My Blood It Runs book, and the ongoing fight for First Nations self-determination: https://lnkd.in/dckKCbdc

Remember the time when the "new towns" initiative - funded by HUD- was working to support the building of 'Soul City'? Me neither! But I think many of you may find this work informative, and worth a look. Especially those focused on community building through an infusion of housing, education, economic development, health care, and safety. Watch below.

On transitional justice In today's excellent and insightful seminar presented by Caitlin Reiger on transitional justice, my questions were: 1) Can transitional justice be successful if it is designed and implemented by the government accused of the mass crimes that necessitated the adoption of transitional justice? and 2) Can economic and environmental justice be part of transitional justice? On the first, she raised the problems of transitional justice, with the government being the designer and guardian of the process. On the second question, she gave examples of success stories for including economic justice as part of transitional justice. Title of the seminar: The evolution of Transitional Justice: From post-authoritarian settings to established democracies Venue: ANU CoL.

Tribal justice means putting Native nations in the driver’s seat of their own communities. They know best how to provide solutions to the problems their communities face, according to their own customs and traditions. 📖 Learn more about these approaches to justice in a Q&A with our Tribal Justice team on The Arc here: https://lnkd.in/ewjuZgJf
