Tech and the human dimension Are we making tech investments with human behaviour as a central driver? From what I have seen in the last 2 years clearly not. So what is the impact: 5 questions of relevance come to mind: 1) Articulation of the problem—more days in the office or better staff engagement 2) A focus on process and efficiency as measured by time on line -- is this a top priority for staff ? 3) What are we measuring—who is in the office when, or the effectiveness of days in the office? 4) How space is being actually used to guide real estate decisions or who is scheduled to be in the office on a specific day? 5) Do our teams have the right tools—tech investments in a complex tool set may not be hitting the mark, a strong mobile centric strategy could deliver more! The best leaders demonstrate emotional intelligence—the ability to recognize and manage one's emotions and the emotions of others. Research shows that emotional intelligence and workplace climate are directly correlated with financial measures like return on sales, revenue growth, efficiency, and profitability. Researchers at IBM, for example, created an Employee Experience Index (EXI) that measures personal experiences at work in terms of belonging, purpose, achievement, happiness, and vigor (enthusiasm at work). Their research (Link below 👇) showed that organizations that score in the top 25% on employee experience report nearly three times the return on assets (and double the return on sales) compared to organizations in the bottom quartile. It's been a week since the eTail™ Retail CIO Connect 2024 event where I shared the stage with Ben Penrose to delve into the impact of the shift to hybrid working post pandemic. I discussed findings from my research as part of my MSc in #organisationalpsychology, focusing on the effects of lockdown on professional women transitioning from office to home-based work during the pandemic. The debate around working from home, hybrid setups, and returning to the office often oversimplifies complex issues into catchy headlines. More research is crucial, alongside educating teams on fostering healthy hybrid work environments. This includes strategies to mitigate work-life conflicts, establish clear boundaries, and navigate transitions between home and work mindsets effectively. The discussion sparked great engagement from the audience, highlighting the pressing need for further exploration and support in this evolving landscape.
