🚺 𝑳𝒆𝒕'𝒔 𝒕𝒂𝒍𝒌 𝒂𝒃𝒐𝒖𝒕 𝒂𝒏 𝒊𝒎𝒑𝒐𝒓𝒕𝒂𝒏𝒕 𝒊𝒔𝒔𝒖𝒆 𝒕𝒉𝒂𝒕 𝒂𝒇𝒇𝒆𝒄𝒕𝒔 𝒎𝒂𝒏𝒚 𝒘𝒐𝒎𝒆𝒏 𝒊𝒏 𝒕𝒉𝒆 𝒘𝒐𝒓𝒌𝒑𝒍𝒂𝒄𝒆 - PMS (Premenstrual Syndrome) and PMDD (Premenstrual Dysphoric Disorder). (Keep reading for my new Femtech find this week!!😉) 𝐏𝐌𝐒 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐏𝐌𝐃𝐃 𝐚𝐫𝐞 𝐧𝐨𝐭 𝐣𝐮𝐬𝐭 "𝐛𝐚𝐝 𝐦𝐨𝐨𝐝𝐬." 🙄 They are real medical conditions that can significantly impact a woman's emotional well-being, productivity, and career. Premenstrual Dysphoric Disorder (PMDD) is a severe form of premenstrual syndrome (PMS), It is estimated to affect more than 1 in 20 menstruating women. According to the International Association for Premenstrual Disorders (IAPMD), 34% of the people who have been diagnosed with the condition have attempted suicide and it takes on average 12 years to be diagnosed with the condition. Only in 2019, did the WHO add PMDD to International Statistical Classification of Diseases and Related Health Problems, meaning it’s now recognised as a legitimate medical diagnosis. 💪 𝐒𝐨 𝐡𝐨𝐰 𝐜𝐚𝐧 𝐰𝐞 𝐜𝐫𝐞𝐚𝐭𝐞 𝐚 𝐬𝐮𝐩𝐩𝐨𝐫𝐭𝐢𝐯𝐞 𝐞𝐧𝐯𝐢𝐫𝐨𝐧𝐦𝐞𝐧𝐭 𝐭𝐡𝐚𝐭 𝐚𝐜𝐤𝐧𝐨𝐰𝐥𝐞𝐝𝐠𝐞𝐬 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐚𝐜𝐜𝐨𝐦𝐦𝐨𝐝𝐚𝐭𝐞𝐬 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐜𝐡𝐚𝐥𝐥𝐞𝐧𝐠𝐞𝐬 𝐰𝐨𝐦𝐞𝐧 𝐟𝐚𝐜𝐞 𝐝𝐮𝐫𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐭𝐡𝐢𝐬 𝐭𝐢𝐦𝐞? 1️⃣ 𝘼𝙬𝙖𝙧𝙚𝙣𝙚𝙨𝙨: Educate ourselves and our teams about PMS and PMDD. Knowledge is the first step towards empathy and understanding. 2️⃣ 𝙁𝙡𝙚𝙭𝙞𝙗𝙞𝙡𝙞𝙩𝙮: Offer flexibility in work arrangements when possible. Whether it's adjusting deadlines or providing remote work options, small accommodations can make a big difference. 3️⃣ 𝘾𝙤𝙢𝙢𝙪𝙣𝙞𝙘𝙖𝙩𝙞𝙤𝙣: Encourage open and stigma-free conversations. Let your team members know that it's okay to discuss their needs and challenges. 4️⃣ 𝙍𝙚𝙨𝙤𝙪𝙧𝙘𝙚𝙨: Share resources and information about managing PMS and PMDD effectively. There are therapies, lifestyle changes, and support networks that can help. I felt inspired to write this post after checking out Jared Williams, Founder of Evelyn Health, who are working on closing the gaps in female health by developing a supplement designed to help Women suffering with PMS/PMDD. I’ve signed up to their Newsletter which you can find here and I'd recommend getting stuck into! 😍 - https://lnkd.in/eBxpF_MK #femtech #womenshealth #pms #pmdd

While it's important for #gastroenterologists to understand a patient's current and past #MentalHealth, discussing these topics can be uncomfortable for them. Understandably, they may not understand why their provider needs to know this information in the first place. In this video, I demonstrate how providers can approach these conversations. It's critical to create a space that allows patients to be honest while upholding their comfort. Empathetic communication is key here.
