Electromagnetic Acoustic Transducer (EMAT) is a non-contact technique that generates the ultrasound in the part inspected using electromagnetic induction. One of the most attractive features of EMAT is that it does not require coupling the transducer or contacting the material. Naturally, the first question that comes to everybody’s mind is how distant the sensor can be from the part under inspection. The answer isn't straightforward, which is why we've detailed it in a white paper with plenty of formulas for the enthusiast. In a recent experiment, we tested these boundaries and successfully measured the thickness of a carbon steel pipe from a distance (liftoff) of 10mm/0.4”.
