#workforcedevelopment colleagues, you all know. There are site visits and there are site visits. Lacy Vong and the HNTB team could have given the students a tour and done a dry, what-time-is-this-over panel. But they didn't. They came out in numbers. They provided one-to-one support to each community college student, conducting mock interviews and resume reviews. And for their panel and interactive Q&A, they made sure to feature HNTB professionals whose lived experiences and career trajectories mirrored those of the students. As we gear up for the International Day of Women and Girls in Science (#IDWGS2024), we've reached out to members of our leadership team to share insights into their journey as a woman in STEM and how they discovered their passion for science. We kicked things off by asking VP Courtney Noah, PhD, about how organizations can step up and play a more proactive role in mentoring women and girls in the life sciences field. Check out her thoughts below and stay tuned for more reflections from our team as we approach IDWGS! “When we talk about supporting women in STEM, we often focus on increasing awareness among high school students and younger generations. While it’s critical to start these conversations early, we should also prioritize investing more resources in women who are at the beginning of their careers. In order to truly break the glass ceiling, we have to be sure we’re offering opportunities for career education and development at later stages for women in the life sciences. Internship and fellowship opportunities for women in grad school and postdocs often have a big impact on where someone ends up and how they choose to direct their career. Long Island, a year-long mentorship program, can empower 23 talented black male youth to excel in technology-related careers. 2. Educational Equity: Advocating for equal access to quality education, with a strong focus on STEM subjects. Implementing targeted programs and resources in underprivileged schools can help nurture interest and aptitude for STEM fields. 3. Leadership Workshops: Organizing workshops that focus on leadership development within the context of STEM. These sessions can instill confidence and effective leadership skills in black boys, preparing them for future opportunities in the workforce. 4. Workforce Development Programs: Collaborating with businesses and organizations to design workforce development programs that offer black boys real-world exposure and experience in STEM fields. Reflecting on another impactful year as a mentor for the Women in Science and Engineering (WiSE) STEM Outreach Program fills me with pride as I share some incredible outcomes. 🚀 Confidence in Pursuing Dreams: At the beginning of the program, only 27.8% felt confident about pursuing their dreams. Now, 69.2% of mentees feel empowered to pursue their goals. 🔬 STEM Career Awareness: Initially, only 13% of mentees had a solid grasp of STEM career paths. Thanks to our efforts, this soared to 56.4% by the end of the program. 🚺 Mentorship Impact: 24.1% of mentees felt they had a strong mentor which dramatically increased to 56.4%. This emphasizes the power of mentorship. By sharing my experiences and insights, I aimed to inspire and empower these young girls to recognize their potential and chart their own paths in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics. Different types of college cultures🙂 College isn't just about academics; it's about immersing yourself in a unique cultural experience. These cultures vary greatly, shaping your social life and overall development. Large public universities often foster a vibrant, diverse atmosphere. With countless student organizations and a bustling social scene, these schools offer a chance to explore various interests and make friends from all walks of life. The energy can be electric, with school spirit on full display at sporting events and campus-wide traditions. Liberal arts colleges, on the other hand, cultivate a close-knit atmosphere. Smaller class sizes and faculty accessibility create a more intimate learning environment. Here, intellectual curiosity takes center stage, with lively discussions and a focus on well-rounded development. Tech-focused institutions boast a culture of innovation and entrepreneurship. Collaborative projects and hackathons encourage students to turn ideas into reality. This environment fosters a drive for excellence and prepares graduates for the fast-paced tech world. Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs) provide a supportive and empowering environment for students of color. They celebrate African American culture and history, fostering a strong sense of community. HBCUs offer academic excellence and create a space where students can thrive without facing racial barriers. Choosing a college goes beyond academics. Understanding the cultural landscape will help you find a place where you can flourish, make lifelong connections, and discover your true potential.

Mentoring has the power to change lives. I wouldn't be where I am today without my mentors and their support to help me see what I was/am capable of. I feel proud to work for a company invested in STEM equity and excited to see the impact this programme has over the next 10 years.
