It's been enough time now so I can tell you this story.
Get ready.
So, I was invited to do a marketing masterclass for a group leading some of the top restaurant brands in the world. You won't believe the brands I was going to work with! 🎉
About a month before kicking off, I had a call with the VP of Marketing overseeing these brands and the team. the idea was to have a rundown of the topics so that they could prepare.
Things went south straight away. When I mentioned I would focus on doubling down on the emotional connection between brands and people and how to take advantage of it, I was stopped on the spot.
This "VP" said: "We don't need any of that emotional BS, we need to know how to make more out of our money, how to show more ROI and to get our people out of marketing crap that doesn't work" 😱
As you can imagine, emotional marketing being my jam, I wasn't pleased about his comments, but I tried to explain to him that the reason why I chose one of his brands over others, is that I remember my parents taking me there, that was a special place. Also that last "Kids' Day" they took a photo of my family and we have that displayed on our fridge, and that's why my kids ask to go back there all the time.
He said: "That might be your case, but most people will focus on what pizza has more pepperoni to make their choice" 🙄
I knew it was a lost battle and I resigned from that class right after that call.
Now, he has a point, many people will choose slightly better products or products that give you a little more for your money, true.
But the reason why they will come back to you and promote your brand with their friends and family is because of the experience, because of the way they felt there (of course the quality of the food too) 🍕
There is always a "business" layer in marketing when you have to think about competing on price, size, quantity, etc. But the real reason marketing works, is the experience, the values they can actually see and feel.
I would take a smaller pizza any day if the experience at the restaurant is making me and my family create awesome memories.
And NO, the amount of pepperoni will not be my top factor in choosing where to take them.
Happy #tuesday
