I love it when I get to talk with young people about careers, the importance of work and where the self fits into it all. I had a wonderful time a few weekends ago giving this talk and engaging in Q&A afterwards. I was really excited when a young man who was about 17 years old came up afterwards and said what struck him the most about what I said was hearing that he was the CEO of his own life. Here’s an excerpt from my talk… “Most people will tell you they work for such an such a company. But you are ultimately the CEO of your own company...it's called your life. You are the finance director, the manager of operations, the human resources director and the line staff. Everyday you go to work, you get to decide how well your company will do. You get to forecast and project future revenues and expenses, you get to determine annual income, you get to determine the quality of your relationships and you get to develop an annual strategic plan with goals and objectives. In other words you get to decide if you will be JC Penny's or Macy... Family Dollar or Target. Today know that success is not determined by your boss, your company, or any other external business entity. It's only determined by the corporation in your mind. The Company of You, LLC Where will your company be 5 years from now?”

It's amazing what shows up when you are open to stepping outside your comfort zone! Last night I was at a Session Meeting at my church, during which I have heard several members say, "I wasn't sure I could offer anything/I wasn't sure I was the right fit" when asked to chair a committee. Maybe it was the Property Committee, from which the building maintenance and repair is overseen, or the Finance Committee, from which the accounts and budgets are overseen, or in my case, it's the Personnel Committee, from which hiring/performance reviews/celebrations are overseen. Each of us individual session members questioned ourselves, when we were asked to chair the selected committee, whether it is a job that fits our talents and skills, and while we couldn't know the answer without stepping into the role, we thought we did. Don't we all do this? We assume from our comfort zone what works for or is a fit for us. And then we get stuck. Our comfort zone is not our friend. It is a safe space, but not one we blossum in. It is cozy but does not require our talents. So, stay there for long, and we develop apathy, boredom, restlessness, sarcasm, and even depression. When we step out of the comfort zone, this is when our value resurfaces - even if we first think we aren't ready, we are. We are always ready for a challenge. Always we are looking for another way to show up, to feel energized, to learn and to grow. Those members who are currently chairing the above committees, each made the choice to step out of their comfort zones, including me. And they and I have seen our minds shift, our talents show up and our appreciation for the role surface. Little did we know, in advance. These are the benefits of getting out of bed, of using a new route, of expanding our circle of influence, of trying something new and of gaining perspective. Open yourself to stepping outside your comfort zone and you will quickly feel the energy of life coursing through you! #attorneysatlaw #stepout

Help has finally arrived!!! 😅 I’m really excited to announce that Lauren Victoria Topping has joined us as Executive Assistant! Lauren will be sorting me out (she certainly has her work cut out 🤣) and helping to make the business run more efficiently – both our Thornton and Kendal office. She’ll also be part of our newly formed management team. We had 235 applicants for this role, but Lauren’s attitude and skills clearly shone through and fit perfectly with our values and vision. I actually fought against hiring for this role for some time, as I wasn’t convinced I needed an executive assistant, but it soon became clear that I desperately needed help, particularly since acquiring Ingalls! (extra slice of humble pie for me... 🥧 ) Giving up control is not easy when you’re used to controlling everything, but it’s essential for growth.
