Today we convened hundreds of certified #dronepilots, #industrycollaborators, #communitypartners and #federalstakeholders in San Ramon for a conference exploring the usage of #unmannedaerialsystems (UAS) for utility operations. The first-of-its-kind event for Pacific Gas and Electric Company included product demonstrations and discussions with #UAS hardware, software and #drone service providers including Advexure, AirData UAV, Infravision, and Skydio, along with a high-powered speaker lineup featuring representatives from the Federal Aviation Administration, DroneUp, USI and several former US Navy F/A 18 pilots who are charting the course for #dronetechnology advancements. PG&E uses drones for advanced #electricsystem inspections across our service area and to perform #gaspipeline leak surveys on 16 miles of water crossings traditionally done by boat. Advanced drones improve system, operator and community safety, and they reduce time and resources needed to conduct inspections, ultimately allowing us deliver service at a lower cost to customers. As Jason Regan, PG&E's Vice President of System Inspections, said: “PG&E operates one of the largest and most advanced drone-based equipment inspection programs in the world and the PG&E 2023 UAS conference is a first-of-its-kind event providing drone pilots with insights on new technologies and best practices for the safe and responsible integration and operation of drones within the energy industry.” PG&E also announced today that it is the first utility in North America to string #powerlines with drones working with Austin, Texas-based Infravision. Organisers of Commercial UAV Expo have announced an important addition to this year’s conference program: the Advanced Airspace Summit. Commercial UAV Expo takes place on 5–7 September at Caesars Forum in Las Vegas, and the Advanced Airspace Summit will be held on Wednesday 6 September as part of the event’s conference program. “There is currently a large gap between crewed and uncrewed aviation,” said Jeremiah Karpowicz, group editorial director at Diversified Communications, organiser of Commercial UAV Expo. “Commercial UAV Expo is working to bridge that gap and create trust within the entirety of the airspace community – including the general public. As the commercial drone industry continues to grow, the UAS community needs to address stakeholders’ challenges and concerns so that we can build the future of the airspace together. “This addition to our conference program will allow attendees to discuss where the industry is today, how the technology will evolve, what regulatory changes will likely be necessary, and what challenges the industry will face related to passenger expectations and public acceptance.” https://lnkd.in/ejJyHbzR #urbanairmobility #advancedairmobility #evtol #airtaxi #electricaviation #USA

I would encourage anyone with strong feelings about the future of the UAV industry in Australia to do a submission in response to the discussion paper. I have put together a submission based on my experiences with implementing FAA RemoteID in ArduPilot. A copy of my draft submission is here: https://lnkd.in/gvEYZtMn If you would like to put together your own submission there is some information here on how to submit a reponse here: https://lnkd.in/gmsMy2tK #UAV #RemoteID #CASA #ArduPilot

Associate Professor | Universidade Federal de Minas Gerais | Head of Mechatronics, Control and Robotics Research Group
[TBT] In the last CBA2022 (Congresso Brasileiro de Automática), the paper entitled "A Robust Adaptive H-infinity Controller for Full Flight Envelope of a Convertible UAV" was one of the three finalists for the best papers award, on the undergraduate category. This work was a result of the Bachelor's Thesis from Jonatan Campos, who was supervised by Daniel Neri Cardoso and myself at Universidade Federal de Minas Gerais. Link to the paper: https://lnkd.in/eRifDsk6 ABSTRACT. A Tilt-Rotor Unmanned Aerial Vehicle (UAV) is an underactuated mechanical system with highly nonlinear and coupled dynamics, that is often subjected to parametric uncertainties, unmodeled dynamics, and external disturbances. To cope with such adversities, this work proposes a robust adaptive controller capable of handling the full flight envelope of the UAV which is composed of cruise and hover flight modes. Most importantly, this work addresses the transition between hover and cruise flight and vice versa. To do so, a multi-body nonlinear dynamic model of a Quad-tiltrotor Convertible Plane (CP) Vertical Take-Off and Landing (VTOL) UAV, here called QuadCP-VTOL, is obtained using the Lagrangian formalism which takes into account nonconservative forces and torques applied by the propellers, tilting mechanisms, canards, wings, and horizontal stabilizers. Thereafter, a Linear Parameter Varying (LPV) model that covers the full flight envelope of the aircraft is derived from the nonlinear model. Accordingly to the adaptive mixing technique, several robust H-infinity state feedback controllers are designed based on a parallel distribution compensation (PDC) method alongside a pole clustering technique to ensure better closed-loop performance. Results of numerical experiments conducted on a high fidelity simulator in a Hardware in the Loop (HIL) framework are presented to corroborate the efficacy of the proposed control strategy. https://lnkd.in/eZp83Tvh #macro #ufmg #CBA2022 #tiltrotor #uav #controlsystems

🔵 ‘Shape-shifting’ UAV 🔵 Elythor has developed a #UAV that can adapt its wing shape to wind conditions and flight position in real time, reducing its energy consumption (writes Nick Flaherty). The #Morpho is part winged UAV, part #quadcopter that can change shape according to the task at hand. The adaptive wings extend the UAV’s flight time and give it greater manoeuvrability, allowing it to fly vertically or horizontally and making it suitable for applications such as inspecting high-voltage lines and powerplants. SkyDrive and CT UAV, a subsidiary of CT Group in Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam have agreed on a pre-order of up to 100 three-seater eVTOL aircraft. SkyDrive was established in July 2018 after testing flying car concepts and prototypes from 2014. CT UAV develops Unmanned Aerial Vehicle (UAV) technologies with the mission to pioneer the integration of artificial intelligence (AI) with UAV technology, and claims it is creating a smarter and more advanced future and improving the quality of life. SkyDrive, which is in the process of acquiring its Japan Civil Aviation Bureau (JCAB) certification, and CT UAV will evaluate commercial eVTOL considerations such as vertiports, routes and network planning, infrastructure requirements and ecosystems with interested stakeholders in launching new mobility solutions in Vietnam. CT Group president Tran Kim Chung commented: “We recognise the importance of leveraging accumulated expertise and technological capabilities in infrastructure development, as well as the development of cutting-edge technologies such as drones and AI. We expect to contribute to the general development of Vietnam on the global market.” https://lnkd.in/eJKaga-T #urbanairmobility #advancedairmobility #evtol #airtaxi #electricaviation

Here is an interesting insight from the Commercial UAV Expo...There were more registrants but less exhibitors last year than this year, but this year there was just a slightly higher attendance. What does this say about the current state of the industry? There were 26 less exhibitors...Have we reached the first "Great Filter" in the industry? Attendance wasn't much higher, but I do feel the quality of interactions went up due to the past year of people gaining more experience in the field, and having deeper and more technical questions. Last Year... "USA, September 15, 2022 – Commercial drone professionals gathered last week for Commercial UAV Expo 2022, held September 6-8, 2022, at Caesars Forum in Las Vegas. The eighth annual event had 232 exhibitors and 3,405 verified professionals on-site of more than 4,100 registrants" This Year... " USA, September 13, 2023 – Commercial drone professionals gathered last week for Commercial UAV Expo 2023, held September 5-7, 2023, at Caesars Forum in Las Vegas. The ninth annual event hosted 206 exhibitors from 22 countries and 3,449 verified professionals from all 50 U.S. states and 54 countries out of 4,008 registrants" Neat stuff...
