Co-Founder & Director Small Wardour ltd - an award-winning children's audio consultancy and production company.
The big question: How do we foster a love of reading with children? The latest research from the National Literacy Trust shows that over half (56%) of children and young people aged 8 – 18 don’t enjoy reading in their free time. It’s truly shocking data. #literacy #reading #books #childrenspublishing #stories

Recently there was talk about an outright ban of social media for children under 18. My experience of working with children is this simply won't work! 1) Children are already using social media underage and putting the age up won't suddenly change the behaviour and uses or children online. 2) The dangers that exist when they are younger will still exist at 18 only when they turn 18 they will be wholly unprepared, unsupervised and uneducated on how to handle social media. 3) It's going to make it even harder for children to develop the skills required for a massive job market. Nearly every single business has to have social media, and there are whole teams built around social media. It will likely cause a massive skills gap (which we are already suffering because our curriculum is not built for today's digital workplaces). So what do I think the solution is? Of course I'm not saying children should be underage on social media, but I also think to be unrealistic with our resolving this matter is to be negligent in our safeguarding of children. We must be realistic and create an environment where children feel they can talk to us about their online lives, and trust us to give good advice. This is more likely to get far better outcomes for safety. Criminalising social media for under 18s will just cause more secrecy and subsequently more harm and risk for children. And a highly underskilled generation, yet their future will be more tech based than ours. #onlinesafety #socialmedia #socialmediaban #metaverse #edtech #safeguarding #childdevelopment #education
