This week I was down at Stockport Interchange with GM’s Active Travel Commissioner Dame Sarah Storey as she shared progress to the media on the region’s active travel mission. (see below) The Interchange is a £1bn project to completely revamp bus facilities, add a new rooftop park, and provide safe & enjoyable walking wheeling & cycling links to and from the hub, including via two new eye-catching bridges. We asked Stockport colleagues if we could site the event at the interchange, as it illustrates the role of active travel in linking people to public transport, and the way the overall Bee Network is taking shape to link all modes together. Almost all of journeys on bus tram or train involve walking at some point - and 44% of people walk to the train station, 53% to the tram stop. And as Greater Manchester’s Bee Network depends on increased public patronage to make it pay - making the first & last mile easy and pleasant to those walking or wheeling is therefore absolutely vital, not to mention the basic job of connecting people from their home to local shops, amenities, families & friends. Dame Sarah spoke about a renewed focus on the pedestrian experience in this next phase of the Bee Active Network (the term to describe the walking and cycling parts of the wider integrated system). This follow an extensive & unprecedented audit of the road network by Transport for Greater Manchester, which has informed a new set of recommended infrastructure priorities which Dame Sarah and TfGM’s walking and cycling director Dr. Richard Nickson, will take to the Bee Network committee this week. TfGM’s proposed pipeline includes upgrading hundreds of junctions & crossings and creating thousands of new crossings too, especially at ‘points of severance’ ie where quieter roads meet busy ones. This audit also revealed that overall, GM’s roads are much busier than previously estimated - which is why the report is also recommending a greater level of protected cycle lanes than previously estimated - up 40% to 1,170km. As Dame Sarah, transport commissioner Vernon Everitt and two Stockport cabinet councillors spoke, they could not have timed it better as a huge tennis-court-sized piece of one of the new bridges was lifted into place behind them, on the banks of the Mersey, swollen from that morning’s rain. This helix bridge will take people up onto the roof of the new interchange, where the new park is being created. And that was the other visual theme of the visit - change in action. There is a huge amount of work being done across the centre; cranes, diggers, lorries, barriers, diversions - and there is no getting away from the fact it is disruptive. Dealing with the inconvenience of this disruption, having patience for the long game, seems a common theme in the delivery of the Bee Network. Deputy council leader Mark Roberts acknowledged the impact but said: ‘’Stockport is really buzzing at the moment as the future is really taking shape.’’
