As cool as it was to see the white ranger with a snowboard skydiving out of an airplane, I know enough about skydiving to know you’ll never make it to the ground in possession of a skateboard doing the same thing. RIP to that skateboard and whatever it hit.

As I reflect on my own leadership journey spanning several decades, I often think about the nature of success. We tend to admire the shining achievements of our colleagues, their rapid ascents, and their seemingly effortless triumphs. But what we don't see is the depth of their struggles, the sacrifices they've made, and the resilience they've mustered along the way.
Here's what I've learned:
1. Every Path is Unique: I've learned that comparing our progress to others is like comparing apples to oranges. Each of us walks a path shaped by different experiences and challenges. Perhaps they had mentors or support systems that played a pivotal role, or they've honed skills that are still on your to-do list. Understanding this has been a game-changer for me.
2. The Hidden Hardships: In my years of leading teams, I've witnessed firsthand that success is rarely a straight line. It's a winding road filled with setbacks, disappointments, and hard-won lessons. Remember, for every achievement that makes it into the spotlight, there are countless hours of unseen effort and perseverance.
3. Acknowledging Your Strengths: It's easy to focus on areas where others excel, overlooking our own unique strengths. In my career, I've realized that for every domain where a colleague shines, there's an area where my abilities make a difference. Recognizing and valuing our own talents is crucial in painting a more accurate picture of our journey.
As leaders, it's empowering to share not just our successes but the challenges that shaped us. Doing so not only inspires our teams but also makes us more relatable and connected. Remember, what we often see in others is just the tip of a vast iceberg, as we see in the image below.
The true essence of leadership lies beneath the surface, in the perseverance, dedication, and resilience that define our journeys.

Looking at your past or even current boss, how do they compare to these metrics? It is worth the time to explore conversations about these memories as they can help you in your further growth, but can also be beneficial for your boss to hear your perspective. This could be a mutual game changer!
Perhaps looking at employees we remember with similar traits could really unleash even more open dialogue to help improve employee boss relationships! JMHO.
🚨 Adapting may be the quintessential trait of the human species. At Abt, it is also the thing that sets us apart.
