Retail is the most dynamic of all the elements of the marketing mix. It is constantly evolving to provide the customer with unique shopping experiences. This may be the way to SAVE shopping malls and lead to a resurgence of brick and mortar sales! What other retailers will step up and reinvent the shopping experience?

The Grand Brand Tour: Savannah Bananas The case study of the Savannah Bananas is truly inspiring. They have created a fun, engaging, attractive brand over the last 10 years where today they have 800,000 people on a wait list to be a part of attending one of their games, not including the tremendous demand for their merchandise. Think about that. As a reference, tickets on the secondary market were going for around $1,100 each to experience Monday’s game in an old 1941 stadium with 4,000 seats. For comparison, the best Atlanta Braves and Chicago Cubs luxury club tickets are about half that cost I’ve seen for some games on the secondary market. Pretty unbelievable! How do you create that attractiveness and buy in in a traditional business like baseball? You invest heavily in building the brand, from signage to apparel to organic social and digital presence and beyond…everything is branded well. It’s a consistent commitment to a mindset internally that is communicated externally that you are investing the time and resources into building the brand and it is important to you. One key driver of Red Bull's success 🐂 This morning I saw the display below in my local supermarket. Over and above it being a fantastic retail display (high impact, high consistency with their brand equity... and just fun!), it reminded me of one of the key things that I've always loved about Red Bull's highly successful & innovative strategy: ➡ they give easy access to their product wherever their core consumer has the need Whilst most beverage companies defined their distribution strategy based on the classic beverage distribution channels, since the very early days Red Bull was heavily focused on where their core consumers needed 'wings' - i.e. student campuses, nightclubs, petrol stations, etc. Their iconic branded Mini cars (embodied in the retail display below) quickly became a powerful symbol of the Red Bull brand going towards their consumers, rather than expecting consumers to go to them. As well as also being a fantastic visibility driver for the brand, of course! So what? Where does your target customer need the benefit of your product or service the most? Here are some notes: • Trending / "Hot" retailers in their portfolio include Scheels and Market by Macy's • "Pioneers" in their older malls who often change the direction of the asset include Warby Parker, lululemon, SEPHORA, Shake Shack, Buck Mason, Faherty Brand, and Nike. Often push for termination rights and start with % rent. Still demanding marketing $ and co-tenancy • Demolished 130 Million SF and only added 4 Million SF in the last 2 years. Highlighting the fact that open-air and enclosed mall owners are preferring to repurpose space over new construction • Challenges Ahead: Overall health of the consumer is a concern. All-Rounder: How DICK'S Built A Sporting #Retail Empire. DICK’S Sporting Goods has knocked it out of the park with its latest quarterly #earnings, setting records for #sales and propelling the company’s shares up more than 15% on Thursday to reach a new all-time high.

The sports #retailer — which originally started life as a fishing shop in 1948 — has grown to become a staple of American retail, counting more than 800 stores across the country at the end of last year, as sales nearly hit $13B. Since its #IPO in 2002, the company has grown at a rapid clip, becoming America’s go-to retailer for everyone investing in a new hobby, upgrading their gear, or making the annual pilgrimage to buy their kids ever-larger #equipment.

The company’s model has been to try and be all things to all people, selling everything from #golf gear to #athleisure #apparel and elite stationary bikes to sleeping bags at its sprawling locations. Although not quite in the same category as #Zoom, DICK’S was also a #pandemic darling for investors, with sales surging 28% in 2021 as demand for stuff-you-can-use-outside soared.

While 2023 brought the company back down to reality, with supply chain costs squeezing margins, it's since returned to meaningful sales growth (8% in its most recent quarter) — not something that many big-box physical retailers can say in the age of e-commerce. "I appreciate Academy Sports’ cautious approach to opening new stores – slow, steady and deliberate," says Mark Ryski, Author, CEO & Founder of HeadCount Corporation. "Investing more time and effort upfront in site selection and store configuration should improve the probability of success of any new location. Furthermore, their strategy of clustering new store openings to create critical mass in a new market also makes good sense. I would advise Academy Sports’ leadership to analyze store traffic volume and conversion rate performance of their best performing stores and consider these characteristics as they build-out new stores. The important thing to remember is that, opening stores is the easy part – getting the stores to deliver the outcomes required is a different matter. Even the very best store locations won’t be successful if the store team can’t execute effectively."
