Many of us were interested in space growing up. Joshua Western was no exception. Today, he’s the co-founder and CEO of Space Forge, one of Europe’s fastest growing space tech startups. Founded in 2018, it wants to help companies produce materials in space that would be “impossible” to produce on Earth, like new alloys. Its logic is simple. When you melt metals in low Earth orbit (LEO): → The lack of gravity means they mix together incredibly well → The lack of atmosphere means there’s little risk of oxidation That helps to create alloys with few defects which can be turned into parts/products that last significantly longer than their Earth-made equivalents… great for the environment. The startup plans to: → Offer its clients customisable “mini-factories”  → ...which will be launched into LEO (with the help of launch partners like SpaceX) → …manufacture materials for up to 6 months at a time → …then return them safely to Earth (thanks to a proprietary heat shield, Lumi Space's tracking software and drone-carried landing nets) In 2021, the company raised a 4x oversubscribed seed round (led by World Fund) and it’s just getting started.
