The "15-minute city" is a concept in urban planning and design that aims to create cities where residents can access most of their daily needs within a 15-minute walk or bike ride from their homes. The idea is to create more livable, sustainable, and resilient urban environments by reducing the need for long commutes, promoting local economies, and improving the overall quality of life for residents. Key principles of the 15-minute city include: Proximity: Essential services such as grocery stores, schools, healthcare facilities, workplaces, parks, and recreational areas are located within a short distance from residential areas. Mixed-Use Development: Neighborhoods are designed to have a mix of residential, commercial, and public spaces, reducing the need for extensive travel between different parts of the city. Active Transportation: The emphasis is on walking, cycling, and other forms of active transportation, making it easier and safer for residents to get around without relying heavily on cars. Public Transportation: Efficient and accessible public transportation options are integrated into the urban fabric, allowing for easy connectivity between neighborhoods and reducing congestion. Local Economy: The focus is on supporting local businesses and markets, which can contribute to a stronger sense of community and reduce the environmental impact of long-distance transportation. Green Spaces: Parks, green corridors, and open spaces are integrated throughout the city to provide residents with access to nature, recreation, and relaxation. Community Engagement: Residents are actively involved in the planning and design of their neighborhoods, fostering a sense of ownership and empowerment. Environmental Sustainability: The 15-minute city concept aims to reduce pollution, energy consumption, and carbon emissions by minimizing the need for car travel and promoting sustainable practices. The concept of the 15-minute city has gained traction in recent years as cities seek to address issues such as urban sprawl, congestion, air pollution, and social isolation. By creating more compact, walkable, and interconnected neighborhoods, proponents of the 15-minute city believe that cities can become more resilient, equitable, and enjoyable places to live. Various cities around the world are experimenting with different strategies to implement the 15-minute city concept and adapt it to their unique urban contexts.

FAKE BUILDINGS! FAKE! CONSPIRACY BUILDING! TOTALLY FAKE! Well... not really. :) But it is a cool idea. This came up in my feed... I never thought about it, but it makes total sense. In Minnesota, we have them... not as prominently as cities... but we have them.. Fake trees... for example. They are mostly set up as repeaters for cell towers. Lots of fake poles and trees that are camo'ed to blend into the environment. Comcast has a bunch of distribution nodes that are fake buildings - you can tell because if you look up the property records for these sites, you'll see that Comcast owns them... even tho they're in residential areas in the city. We also have fake buildings for sewage and gas distribution in the cities. When I lived in DC, there were fake buildings all over the place... nodes for sewage... for the metro ventilation and for tube pressure equalization as the metro rumbled through (there was a building over by the GW campus by Foggy Bottom that was probably a fake building for metro access)... So... what do you think? I think this is a neat idea...

Building envelope addict and innovator ◆ BILDA Rain-screen Fixing SuperSystem inventor, developer and producer
The US is behind in energy efficiency of building envelopes as compared to Europe.Due to cheap energy - ca. two times cheaper than Old Continent. But this is a challenge. Americans can do it now profitting from the mistakes and experience of the leaders. The situation is even more challenging in Australia. There even thermal comfort is worse - average temperature in living space is 2-4 degrees Centigrade lower. Which leads to higher rate of respiratory deseases Down Under.
