Practice Empathetic Relationship Management with their Healthcare Clients Pharmaceutical sales are all about creating relationships with the industry. The best sales reps understand the emotions and motivations of their clients and are able to connect with them. Having empathy for the needs of your client will help build genuine relationships and further your success in pharmaceutical sales. While empathy may come naturally for some, you can learn to build real connections by practicing these four skills. 1-Talk Less, Listen More Learn: to listen and understand your client’s reactions to what you say. Acknowledge their emotions and be interested in their concerns. 2-Understand non-verbal expressions: Be aware of your body language when dealing with customers. Look them in the eye and give them your full attention. This helps put people at ease and feel safe. 3-Be emotionally intelligent: Recognizing your emotions and learning to control them will help you understand those of your customers. If you can identify someone else’s feelings, you make them more comfortable during your visit. 4-Open up and be vulnerable: You don’t always need to have a smile on. Let your guard down be real. Customers will be more drawn to you when they can see you are human too. What makes a great medical/pharmaceutical sales rep? Here's my take on it: 1. Communication In the world of pharma sales, effective communication is everything. It's not just about conveying complex medical information with clarity; it's also about listening, understanding, and building connections. 2. Industry/Product Knowledge Selling in this industry is about trust, and product knowledge is a key element in building this trust. Beyond knowing the products, understanding the medical conditions they target and keeping up with industry trends are crucial. A successful rep must also know their customers deeply to ensure they can continually help them achieve their goals. 3. Resilience. Facing the competitive and ever-changing landscape of the pharmaceutical industry calls for resilience. The most successful reps are tenacious and can adapt to new challenges. They also need to be able to deal with rejection and negative feedback in a positive way, using them as fuel to improve.
