They can be found in vacant storefronts, event spaces, or even inside other retail stores. The charm of a Pop-Up Shop lies in its exclusivity and the sense of urgency it creates among consumers. Pop-up retail, also known as pop-up store (pop-up shop in the UK, Australia and Ireland) or flash retailing, is a trend of opening short-term sales spaces that last for days to weeks before closing down, often to catch onto a fad or scheduled event.

The modern trend of pop-up retail started in Los Angeles in the late 1990s, and went on to become used internationally, being particularly popular in the United States, Canada, United Kingdom and Australia. Pop-up retail was an increasing factor during the retail apocalypse of the 2010s, including seasonal Halloween retailers who operate stores in vacant spaces during the season. In 2018 the pop-up industry was estimated to be worth $50 billion.[1]

MAKE A GREAT FIRST IMPRESSION – AND THE CUSTOMERS WILL REMEMBER YOU
I have opened 100+ stores in my retail years. Store openings are always exciting, full of pressure, a little bit despair and finally fulfilment, when store is opened. Not all openings have succeeded although there has been lots of skill and motivation on the work.
One thing though I have learned: the successful store opening is really important. If you have a great grand opening, it will have a long-lasting affect. When the customers have a good grand opening experience, they have a positive image of the store. Good grand opening also has a huge impact on store staff. The team spirit will be strong, and it carries the staff for a long period.
In creating the first impression in new store the details really matter. When the store is clean, well-stocked, nicely displayed, well-lit and have a pleasant atmosphere, it will be great for the store. Important part of the nice atmosphere is the staff behavior and attitude. Smiling, happy staff builds trust. When you have a great grand opening, it will start a circle of good. Customers are happy and thus also staff is happy.
I visited a new supermarket in a new mall in the city of Vantaa. This new supermarket is part of the S-group, the format is S-market. I was impressed in many ways: the entrance was impressive and first display superb and timely – note the Halloween pumpkins. The lighting in the store was interesting, quite modest on the aisles, but really effective on displays. The whole ambience gave a high-quality image, which should be so since the store was brand new. Staff was smiling and welcoming customers in the new store. It will be interesting to visit this place after few months and see, if they have maintained the high standards.
Building a new store is a big investment. Making the investment successful secures the planned payback. You can only open new store once. If the grand opening fails, it will take a long time to turn the store to right direction. The higher standards you have, the better you motivate and inspire your staff the better frame you have for the successful opening. Only way to learn how to make a great grand opening is to make a lot of grand openings. #grandopening#impresscustomers#retailisdetail#openingnewstore#retailmarketing#retailstandards
I’m an in person shopper for the most part, and I tend to favour independent boutiques. Malls have their place in the retail space, they just need to rethink their model to attract small/medium size independent stores. After all in a country where the temperature dips well below zero half of the year, it makes sense to have as many goods and services under one warm roof! How about having daycares in there? Car wash and oil change services so your car gets cleaned while you shop? Pet groomers so you can drop your fur babies on the way to the grocery store. Anyway, they need to find ways to bring the convenience back into the model. We can’t just keep the urban sprawl by creating more strip malls and getting rid of green spaces to build stand alone stores or big box store areas. It’s time to repurpose or bring new life to what we have! 😉
I was at Chinook Mall in Calgary tonight and it was kinda eerie. The windows to Nordstrom’s showed a vast, vacant space. The mall was super dead. The parking lot’s lights were out. I couldn’t help but wonder how long malls have left to survive. With the huge influx of online shopping will retailers have a brick and mortar presence in the years to come? Are you a mall or online shopper? #futureofretail
Another example of #Mall repurposing, or at least changing their mix from purely retail to “experiences.”
These grocery and food stores are being built where #Sears once was, something in common with many such mall #Revitalization projects.
#Toronto’s #Fairview Mall is right at the terminus of #Subway Line 4 of the #TTC, where many #Bus routes also connect.
There is a lot of planned #Development around this area. The mall will be a desired destination, within short walking distance of mid-rise and high-rise #Housing.

📍 I'm thrilled to share Stephanie McCaffrey and Erin Robertson's successful opening of Pickle Pop🏓, the new indoor pickleball venue on Santa Monica’s Third Street Promenade, and how it's paving the way for a fresh perspective on America's big-box retail challenges.
🔄 Adaptive Reuse of Retail Space: In the era of e-commerce and evolving consumer preferences, Pickle Pop's founders took a bold step by creatively repurposing a former Adidas store into an engaging pickleball venue. This showcases the immense potential of breathing new life into vacant retail storefronts, transforming them into vibrant community spaces.
💪 Economic Resilience: Amid the challenges faced by malls and big-box stores on the Promenade and nationwide, Pickle Pop exemplifies a promising alternative. By diversifying the businesses within retail districts, it reduces dependency on traditional retail tenants, making these areas more adaptable to market changes.
🤝 Community Engagement: Pickleball, a widely loved sport, caters to a diverse audience, from passionate athletes to social players. Pickle Pop not only contributes to the local sports community but also nurtures a social hub. This aspect is particularly valuable in areas dealing with public safety and homelessness concerns.
🌟 Innovation in Retail Concepts: Pickle Pop introduces an exciting experiential retail concept, seamlessly blending sports, fashion, dining, and entertainment under one roof. It underscores the idea that retail spaces should offer memorable experiences to attract and retain customers.
💼 Local Economic Boost: With memberships, reservations, and hosted events, Pickle Pop generates revenue that extends benefits beyond its own business. It creates jobs, draws visitors, and holds the potential to invigorate neighboring businesses.
📈 Adaptation to Changing Trends: Recognizing the soaring popularity of pickleball, the fastest-growing sport in the US, Pickle Pop aligns itself with evolving consumer preferences, increasing its chances of success.
Pickle Pop's transformation of a vacant retail space into an innovative pickleball venue sets a remarkable example of revitalizing struggling retail districts, fostering community bonds, and responding to evolving consumer demands in the dynamic real estate landscape. This innovative approach could serve as a model for entrepreneurs seeking to repurpose empty retail spaces in an ever-changing retail environment.
