‘The first year is the worst.’ This was one piece of advice Ashlyn received as a beginning teacher. As a PTT (permission to teach) graduate she thought she was well prepared, but has found ‘the climate of education and teaching unsustainable.’ Not quite a year in, Ashlyn is leaving teaching. She works in a ‘fantastic school’ and says seeing her job advertised has been both heartbreaking and a relief. I’m sharing her story with permission. The first year needn’t be the worst. If you have PTT or beginning teachers (1-3 years) in your school, consider supporting them with an ongoing gradual release induction program designed specifically to build capacity and lead them beyond orientation to proficiency. We need to support our young teachers so that they’re just as enthusiastic about teaching at the end of the year as they are at the beginning.
