I was in Belgium on Monday doing a one-day workshop on Mass Customization for an industrial manufacturer, and I went into length on our concept of customer sacrifice -- the gap between what a customer really, truly wants and what they have to settle for today. And as I almost always do, I used showers as an example because, as I told the group, they've been around for hundreds of years and yet are still replete with sacrifice. When I asked for dimensions of shower sacrifice -- dimensions along which people differ in what they want exactly -- the group immediately mentioned temperature (always the most important!) and then went on to rattle off water pressure, temperature-keeping, size of the enclosure, water getting on the floor, figuring out the controls, and on and on. (I once had a woman in one workshop come up with over 30 dimensions of shower sacrifice.) Given all the hotels I and the group participants stay at all the time, there's never a shower that exactly meets our own individual needs. So imagine my surprise (and pleasure) at reading this article in The Wall Street Journal by Dawn Gilbertson using very similar words to mine: "We've Used Showers for Centuries.
