Housemothers at Milton Hershey School play an important role in a student's life. They are role models, caregivers, nurturers, and educators. Students and graduates are shaped by the lessons learned in their student homes. Houseparents also build meaningful connections with parents/sponsors to honor the sacrifices they make every day. In this week's Mother's Day MHS Minute, three housemothers share their impact on generations of MHS students, graduates, and their families—through a combined 60 years of service. #MHSSpartanStrong

In honor of #WorldBrailleDay, we’re throwing it back to last May when NDSS sponsored The Harkin Institute’s Dining in the Dark experience in collaboration with Voya Financial, Perkins School for the Blind, and the National Braille Press. Our President & CEO, Kandi Pickard, was honored to speak on a panel on increasing inclusion and accessibility in employing individuals with disabilities. Did you know? • Only 1 out of 5 blind schoolchildren use braille. • 84% of blind children attend public school. • There is a shortage of teachers qualified to teach braille. Per the National Braille Press, research has shown a positive correlation between a blind person's learning of braille and lifetime achievement. One study shows that only 30% of blind people are employed, but of this group, 90% are braille readers. Yet, families with blind children often have an uphill battle in ensuring that their child is taught to read and write. Even in today's technology-driven world, Braille can reduce barriers to information! E-Braille can help blind people surf the internet, text, e-mail, download books, and stay connected to the world as never before. For more information about Braille, visit https://www.nbp.org.

"Why Did You Join The Idaho Army National Guard?" Roughly four years ago, I made the big move from my home state of Alaska to Boise, ID. At the time, I was only 18 years old and fresh out of high school. I had graduated a semester early with the intent of joining the Alaska Army National Guard but with all plans, that changed. Was it for the better? I truly believe so. At the peak of quarantine, I was lost. I believe we all were at that point. Desperation started to creep in to find some job to get me outside of the four walls that seemed to grow smaller and smaller everyday. As things slowly started to open up, I applied for everything; "Beggers cant be choosers". The search was extensive and I was growing more concerned with bills that unemployment couldnt keep up with. Becoming a hostess and busser at The Cheesecake Factory became a saving grace in that time and soon, working part-time as a Newborn Hearing Screener as well. However, my young self longed for something deeper. Watching war movies and seeing people in uniform serving the community nagged at me, but in a good way. That itch that never went away, was right in front of me everywhere I went. I wanted to wear that uniform and I wanted to do something bigger for myself. I had no idea that I was living in a military heavy state! Knowing deep down that this was my calling, I had to walk through that storefront. Filling out that thick application that was decorated with bold yellow letters spelling "Army" was the most thrilling thing I had ever done. So why did I choose the Army National Guard and not active duty? Personally, I got tired of moving. I had moved so much throughout my life. The rush of a new state no longer felt as exciting as it had before. Also, I had a little girl who needed some stability and a strong female role model active in her life. The idea that I only had to sacrifice 5-6 months for initial training was appetizing. Everyone needs that sense of fullfilment. I get that through my service to community and country at the comfort of my home state. To add, I now have the opportunity to help those who are in the same situation I was in. Not to add to the cliche, but hearing that I helped a junior in high school find a sense of purpose tugged at my heart strings. I found community. I found fullfilment. I found stability. I found a career. Would you be willing to take the call too? #army #armynationalguard #idaho #idahoarmynationalguard #military #armystrong

Workforce development is stronger because of real relationships with people. Partnerships are about mutual benefit and respect. The workforce program makes a real impact in overlooked people’s lives, because of the many people backing it up. #cityfields #partnerships #workforcedevelopment
Partnership is a word that gets thrown around a lot in the world I work in. But this group that I am humbled to be a part of is something special. We have come together with a laser focused mission...to serve those that are often overlooked and forgotten. 📢 #DEIBMoves - Staff Spotlight! Who's that Manager? Meet Millicent Fynn! As a Manager at the Education Department: I primarily support all the family shelter sites and their Children’s Services Coordinators by providing the following resources: Virtual tutoring programs (Learn & Earn/ TAP-In), Children’s & teen programming (Summer Adventure Camp/ Teen Wellness), McKinney-Vento liaison connection and enrollment assistance, School enrollment assistance, CSC trainings and data check-ins, CSC site event collaborations, Client supply needs (car seats, shoes, diapers, wipes, etc.). In short, I’m like a Costco for client family needs and CSC support. My favorite part about working at the Education Department: I get to think outside of the box and be creative in ways to support others effectively in doing my job. I enjoy the fact that I can be in the mix of something I’ve created and see first-hand how it impacts the very people I created it for. Because my department is so versatile, I’ve had to learn how to do things outside of my regular duties, which, in turn, has added to my skillset. Ultimately, I enjoy the team that I’m with; they make work fun on days when I need it to be. A fun fact about me: I have been on 2 game shows. #LifeMovesOrg #StaffSpotlight

"REAL Financial Planners are not defenders of OUTDATED maps. They are GUIDES in a changing landscape." - Carl Richards
As a financial charge fathering adventures at home and forecasts at work, I've realized that whether I’m explaining the importance of diversification to clients or the moral of "The Tortoise and the Hare" to my kids, the core of my day boils down to one thing: imparting wisdom. Here's a little nugget I've learned from juggling these roles: The best advice, whether for investing or bedtime, isn't always the most complex. Sometimes, the simplest lessons are the most enduring. Just like I tell my clients to keep a diversified portfolio to manage risk, I remind my kids that slow and steady often wins the race, even if it's just finishing their dinner. So, here's to all the hats we wear—may they be ever brimful with wisdom! And remember, while the stock market may have its ups and downs, the bedtime story market is always bullish. What's the best piece of simple advice you've given or received that's had a profound impact? #FinancialWisdom #ParentingTips #LifeLessons
Cheers to the dads who’ve invested in our futures, and whose guidance has been our greatest asset. Wishing everyone a happy #FathersDay weekend!

A lot of folks think that Blackjack is a game of luck. It’s not. It’s a game of quitting. It’s a game of walking away. Before you ever sit down at a Blackjack table, you have to get clear with yourself on when you’re walking away. If you lose the money you sit down with, you’re going to be tempted to pay another visit to the ATM in a desperate attempt to win back what you’ve lost. On the contrary, if you go up a bunch of money, you’re going to be tempted to continue playing, in hopes that you can win even more. In either case, the answer is to walk away. Perseverance might be the most celebrated value in the United States. All of us are taught at a very young age that quitting is a cardinal sin and so many of us “persevere” even when it’s to our own detriment. To cash in on our success and limit the extent of our failures––all without sacrificing our happiness and well-being––we must develop the discipline to get up from the table and walk away. The next time you’re faced with the decision of whether or not you should quit something, get honest with yourself ask the following question… Is it harder to “quit” or to “persevere”? Usually what is harder is the right answer.
#185: Walk away. — Cole Schafer.
