Let's chat PLASTICS RECYCLING... 👕
Here in Australia, we have a company making WAVES when it comes to plastic recycling. Samsara Eco is one of few global companies that is using enzymatic recycling, whereby specially engineered enzymes are used to break down plastics.
Every year, more than 400m tons of plastic is produced globally, which since the 1950s is at the bottom of the Mariana Trench and, to the surprise of many, in most of the clothing worn by everyone on Earth.
The problem with conventional recycling technology is that it is essentially “downcycling,” degrading plastics over time such that a single bottle, for example, can only be reborn about five times before it loses all required quality characteristics. This is especially troublesome in the world of clothing, where the likes of nylon, polyester, acrylic, and spandex are notoriously difficult to recycle.
Samsara’s technology isolates specific plastics within a piece of clothing, allowing it to create uncontaminated monomers that are useful in reproducing new plastics. The idea is that this makes it possible to infinitely recycle plastics without degrading them.
NOW Samsara is attracting the likes of Manin Sequence VC, Temasek Holdings as well as Lululemon, Hitachi Ventures, and Greycroft Coca‑Cola System Sustainability Fund. Over $100m raised and a definate WATCH THIS SPACE.
