Today was a full travel day but I still managed to source some great candidates using Betterleap! THREE Tips to be found: Make sure your location is up to date! Most of the roles I’m recruiting for are hybrid and that’s the first thing I check. Today I spoke to three candidates who were in fact, not in the location listed on their LinkedIn 😬 Fix your headline. It should speak to what you want to do and not be six different things. I’m sorry but use your about section for that. Be specific in your headline for more specific results. Network with more people doing the job you want. Yep. The people doing the work. Not the hiring manager, not HR, but the people with the titles that you are aspiring to have. Talk to them. Get to know them. It will make a difference - promise! What would you add? What are you doing to stand out from the pack?

Have you ever come across a post that just seems completely out of touch? Well— today I came across one from a recruiting agency that honestly made me cringe. They listed all the standard criteria like must be able to work on-site for x days a week, etc. But here’s the kicker: one of their no-no’s? JOB HOPPING. In this market. When over 50k employees in the tech industry have been laid off in 2024 alone. Seriously?! If they’re fixated on that, it really makes you question if they're in sync with the reality of today's job market. And why candidates or clients would want to work with someone so disconnected from reality. I’m not one to jump on the recruiter-hate train but it’s things like this that give our profession a bad reputation.

Even if you have no plans to leave your current role/company anytime soon, it may be a good idea to have at least one number in your phone (+61 498 341 206) for the following reasons: 💵 Remuneration insights: Find out what the market is paying for your skillset (I have seen >$50,000 discrepancies here). 🌐 Market insights: Who's hiring, firing, great and not-so-great to work for - and what's happening outside of your niche, sector or region. 📈 Upskilling: Want to get from A to B? We can tell you what you need to get there whether it's a qualification, degree or simply expanding your network. 💸 Negotiation assistance: Make the most of your 1-2 chances per year to bump up your compensation package. A thing I didn’t expect to happen this year is to be out unemployed…. Being made redundant a week before Christmas was a blow but one which I just took in my stride and got on with it. I decided to set myself up as a self-employed consultant to fill the gap whilst I look for a permanent role which fits my lifestyle and needs. However that plan hasn’t come to fruition, I knew it was going to be tough but WOW it’s a tough market currently and a lot of my contacts are saying the same, I’ve had a few enquires and leads but no one is committed to spending currently, it’s either me or the signing the times 🤔😂. I’ve applied for circa 530 jobs so far, adjusted my CV three times, spent money on getting looking and sounding better, 6 interviews and the feedback is good but someone else was more suited or had more sector experience, I’ve had a few ghosts and some great promises, but yet 6 months in I’m still living off my lifetime savings and they are reducing rapidly. So what do you do? Do you carry on and hope that something comes along soon or do you have to just get some money in to keep the wolves off your back? Answers on a postcard. For everyone in the same situation, I hope this gives you some comfort that it may not be just you in this situation. To all the companies asking for a profile setup and all the details under the sun just so you can ignore the application, please think of the person applying to join your company. Also if someone has applied for a role, maybe give them some comfort that you’ve received the CV and if they are not successful either let them know or get back to them at least. Anyway, the sun is out so hopefully the nicer weather is upon us. Happy Thursday 😊
