Did you know? Research shows that, in California, Black women reentering society after periods of incarceration are more vulnerable to rearrest as targets of the police, and they have more difficulty maintaining stable housing and employment. Thanks to Dr V. Nikki Jones, DSW, MPA, LCSW, LMFT for inviting me to collaborate on this newly released peer reviewed journal article. Social Work Advocacy for Black Reparations Authors: V. Nikki Jones, DSW, MPA, LCSW, LMFT, Cathy McElderry, Dr. Lacey McNary, DSW, MSW, Carmelita Dotson, and Kenya Frazier Abstract: Reparations are acknowledgement, acceptance, and redress for gross injustices and wrongdoings. U.S. Black reparations can attempt to address and repair systematic oppression through comprehensive interventions aimed at the vestiges of chattel enslavement and undoing and countering disproportionate, negative outcomes experienced by African Americans. Social workers committed to doing anti-racism should fervently advance reparations in social work education and practice as a social justice policy priority. This article envisions ways that social workers can actualize advocacy for reparations as an anti-racist practice. The social work profession has the potential to serve and support the Black reparations movement through education, collaboration, and community organizing.

That's a staggering number that highlights the disproportionate impact of systemic injustices on marginalized communities. In 2023 alone, almost one-third of the clients Cast served were Black, and the statistics surrounding their experiences are even more alarming. • 57% experienced forced criminality • 34% had previously been arrested • 63% were unhoused at the beginning of services • 42% reported adult sexual assault, and 45% reported domestic or family violence. These numbers are significantly higher than the overall client population, further emphasizing the urgent need for change and support for these communities. Black Americans continue to face systemic inequalities that disproportionately impact their health, safety, and economic well-being. 💔 Therefore, many local organizations in San Francisco are working to address this injustice by aiding unhoused Black residents in three impactful ways: ✊🏾 1️⃣ They provide emergency and temporary shelter along with basic necessities like food and clothing. 2️⃣ Their job training and placement programs help individuals gain career-ready skills, build professional networks within the San Francisco community, and secure living wage employment in the city. 3️⃣ They connect residents to social services, legal aid, healthcare, and other resources. #blacklivesmattertoo #blackequity #racialjusticenow #housingjustice #endhomelessnessnow
