🌟 A Coach's Journey: Learning, Growing, and Embracing New Challenges 🌟 Today I am reflecting on my journey coaching my school district's inaugural soccer team during my first year as a teacher, I'm reminded of the incredible adventure it was—full of unexpected twists, learning curves, and profound moments of growth. There I was a first year public school teacher tapped to coach the new soccer team; with a passion for soccer but zero experience coaching a team...I dove right in. I read texts on the game, watched YouTube tutorials; and yes, I even revisited the 1995 classic "The Big Green" for inspiration. But, I soon realized that our team deserved more. They needed expertise beyond my own, someone who could bring a fresh perspective and a wealth of soccer savvy to the table. So, I reached out to the LSU soccer program, hoping to find some backup in the form of assistant coaches. And boy, did I strike gold! Two amazing young coaches, fueled by passion and armed with expertise, joined our coaching staff, bringing a whole new level of energy and insight to our team. With their help, we transformed our motto, "enjoy the work, enjoy the game, strive to win," from words on paper to a living, breathing philosophy that guided us through every practice, every game, and every victory. Their impact was undeniable, and their cultural perspectives—especially from one coach hailing from Kosovo—added an unexpected richness to our team dynamic. It was a reminder that diversity is not just about different backgrounds; it's about the wealth of knowledge and experience that comes with it. This experience taught me more than just how to coach soccer—it taught me the power of humility, collaboration, and the willingness to embrace challenges head-on. Do better, not more. A wide-ranging conversation on learning and coaching with Sebastian Delport yesterday evening (I told you there was some post worthy takeaways for me) reminded me of this important idea. There’s a tendency to think we get better by doing more. More reps, more shots, more throws. The reality is it’s hard to add more in the already time and resource stretched environments of elite and community sport. And we get people complaining about the amount of time athletes spend working on skills on their own time. There’s no room for it. If we want to get better, it’s not about doing more, it’s about doing better. Better reps, better shots, better throws. Quantity is a brute force tactic for getting better. You’ll get better, but it will take more time. Quality is a strategic tactic. It takes more time to plan, but you’ll get more out of your time. You need a coach After training for strength sports for over a decade and competing several times, I thought I had it all figured out. #BaseballActionID - INNOVATION IN PLAYER DEVELOPMENT Innovative Coaching: Harmonizing Data Analytics and Motor Preferences We can talk all we want about data and pitch design in baseball, but before we can get the best results, we need to understand how each pitcher prefers to move their body. If we don't, we won't get the best results! Because Pitching from a position of strength has nothing to do with laws of science but with laws of individual motor preferences! Knowing how each person naturally likes to move. For example, are they Anterior Muscle Chain or Posterior Muscle Chain dominant athletes? Are they Horizontal or vertical-oriented athletes? Do they have a high or low point? Which is their motor shoulder? These are just a few of the preferences that affect how they pitch and move in general. Before we can teach players how to throw and pitch, we need to figure out their preferred way of moving and know each individual motor profile! Many of today’s injuries happen because we try to teach them to move in ways that don't match their natural motor preferences. You see, you can't apply mechanical rules to how people move because everyone is unique. Our bodies are naturally built to move in specific ways. From a young age, we learn how to deal with gravity, and this shapes our muscles and bones. Even before we're born, our brains create connections that determine how our muscles work throughout our lives. We call these connections "motor preferences." So, instead of making athletes move in a specific way just because a book says so, or because it seems like a good idea, or even because it might give us better data, we should instead take the time to understand how they naturally like to move. We should create an environment where they can freely explore and express themselves. It's crucial for coaches to know a player's motor profile, but even if they don't, coaching with the right intent can still lead to good results. The body naturally organizes itself to achieve the goal, as described by Bernstein's principle, as long as we're moving in a way that feels right for them.
