We applaud the Washington State Healthcare Authority’s (HCA) Health Technology Assessment (HTA) resulting in a new coverage determination of spinal cord stimulation (SCS). This decision enables access to SCS therapy for state employees, Medicaid recipients, and individuals with worker’s compensation coverage. SCS helps treat low back pain, failed back surgery syndrome (persistent lower back pain experienced post spine surgery), or painful diabetic peripheral neuropathy (a debilitating complication of diabetes). This was a collective effort from the passionate advocacy of local physicians, the North American Neuromodulation Society (NANS) in collaboration with many additional physician societies, and companies that develop this technology for people living with chronic pain. ⤵️ Key takeaways: 🥸 ⏩️ When transcatheter aortic valve replacement (TAVR) was first cleared by the FDA in 2012, centers adopting the technology were required to enter all their procedural data into a American College of Cardiology/Society in Thoracic Surgery (ACC/STS) National Cardiovascular Data Registry (NCDR) to make it easier for the FDA to monitor outcomes with the new technology. ⏩️ A decade later, that requirement still stands. In fact, it has been so successful that similar registries have been created for other new interventional and electrophysiology technologies. ⏩️ The detailed quality metrics offer a clear apples-to-apples comparison with other TAVR centers so a program can track its level of success and where it may need additional training.
Data registries have been a huge success for U.S. structural heart programs
