Intern Spotlight!!! C&B is proud to recognize Trey Reynolds. Trey Interned with C&B this summer before returning to Auburn University to finish his Degree in Industrial Engineering. Trey hit the ground running when he came on board helping us set up our new lining & coating facility. He worked under the direction of our plant engineer to perform time studies, process flow models, and physical set up of the process flow that we are currently using today. Trey jumped right in to learning our products and processes, and helped in many departments this summer. "What I enjoyed the most was being able to give my input on important projects and decisions, something that many lower-level employees/interns don’t commonly have an opportunity to do. I enjoyed learning the steps and procedures needed to complete a project. For example, how to go from the early development stage to getting the idea approved, then contacting vendors and getting the necessary material ready to actually implement the solution/idea." Good Luck this fall Trey!!!

That's a wrap! Just finished up today's webinar with Connecticut Center for Advanced Technology (CCAT) and here are some of the top questions we got about how to create a successful internship program: 1. What are some of the ways your internship programs have evolved over time? At Westminster Tool for years we never had a formal program and instead searched for interns for specific projects with applicants of a specific skillset. But we found that we weren't building long-lasting, meaningful relationships from these opportunities. Today, we've changed our approach to focus on how WE can add value to the intern. We search for applicants from all different educational and skill backgrounds and focus on creating goals around their needs. As a result, we have a better chance of inspiring the next generation of manufacturers in our state, and the interns we work with are more likely to want to stay. 2. What are some lessons learned? What are some of the biggest mistakes you've made with interns? The biggest lesson learned is to stop siloing interns in a closed-off area of the business. Even when hiring an intern for super specific project or technical area, it's absolutely critical to expose them to other areas of the business and the rest of your team. Internships are all about professional exploration, not just about completing a project and adding value to the company. So it's important to give that intern a real opportunity to meet new people and explore other career paths. 3. What can small businesses do to get started with building an internship program for the first time? Take advantage of state resources! CT is home to so many different resources for finding applicants and funding programs. Connecticut Center for Advanced Technology (CCAT)'s Internship Program not only gives you access to a whole database of regional applicants looking for manufacturing internships, but also offers wage reimbursement support to help offset those costs.
Join me and CT Manufacturing leaders this Friday 11AM ET for a virtual panel on developing technical internship programs at your facility! I'll be sharing my own experiences with building a talent pipeline and encouraging other CT businesses to build out their own internship programs. Did you know? Freshmen are welcome to join the SCALE program! Zach Au, who joined SCALE as a freshman, gives this advice, “Consider what SCALE has to offer. It offers a lot of opportunities, whether it be meetings with professors from different universities, good internship opportunities and opportunities to do research. These are opportunities not requirements, so there’s no harm in joining SCALE, it’s only a good thing.” Learn more about Zach’s experience in SCALE as a freshman: https://lnkd.in/gyXBJtdF

8 semesters 44 subjects 1460 days And 100000 assignments, vivas, projects later 😅 Finally got my Engineering Degree. 🥳 The amount of pressure we handle while studying is something only engineers know. Completing whole subject a night before exam, Attending college fests around you while bunking classes, BT of internship and placements we all share. And many more memories which are irreplaceable for life. Truly we make or break ourselves in the college and I hope I did what was good for me. Onto the new phase of life 🚀 #engineering #degree #softwareengineer

July 27 is #NationalInternDay, and Team Tobyhanna is taking the opportunity to highlight some of the depot's best and brightest who have participated in internship programs and other student experience programs. Internships can often be the foundation for a long and rewarding career, according to Chase Gardner, Chief of the Project Engineering Branch. While a junior at Penn State, Gardner entered the Pathways program’s predecessor, the Student Career Experience Program, as an intern and worked part-time at Tobyhanna while completing his degree. He says the experience was extremely valuable. “Interning allowed me to gain practical experience that complemented my academic studies,” he said. “The opportunity also allowed me to see what types of skills I would need to be an engineer at Tobyhanna and then ensure I took those classes to round out my skillset.” After graduation, Gardner joined Team Tobyhanna as a full-time electrical engineer. As a lifelong learner, he sought out additional developmental experiences in the Production Management Directorate; the Command Group; and through a variety of leadership trainings – all of which led to his current position. “During the first seven years of my depot career, I had a singular view of the depot. Developmental assignments helped me understand the business as a whole, a critical skill to move ahead in my career. Gardner encourages self-starters to pursue a depot career, noting the vast array of career options. “Endless opportunities exist at Tobyhanna. You just need to seek them out.” #TOBY2035 | #InvestInOurPeople | #ShapeTheFuture | #C5ISRReadiness | #ConnectingWithTheCommunity [image description: The image depicts a person posing for a portrait outdoors.
