Unbundling travel with Spotnana, enabling innovation with multiple startups - TravelTopia speaker, Copenhagen Goodwill Ambassador
What a week - so many important things have happened so I decided to reflect a little on my flight back home to SFO from FRA - thank you again to United Airlines and Marcel Fuchs for sponsoring my flights in support of the BATM - Belgian Association of Travel Management event in Luxembourg on the 21st September The biggest news was the announcement of the new Spotnana Carbon Removal service (see link to my blog below) which already have generated an impressive amount of interest from corporate travel buyers - and interestingly many of them are with other TMC's and OBTs today so the service clearly resonate with our target audience - but at present it is only available for active Spotnana customers, sorry about that 😀 our announcement was even picked up by several sustainability focused media services, thank you for sharing it Secondly, I debuted a new version of my #Traveltopia story with a special focus on AI and the new LLM models at the BATM event, and the immediate feedback from the audience was extremely positive - so if you are interested in an un-biased overview of how AI might impact our beloved travel industry then reach out and I will be happy to present #traveltopAI at your event. The next edition of Traveltopia will be in Stockholm on the 19th October at the Nordic Business Travel Associations event Thirdly, I have been doing my own research about why corporate travel buyers continue to accept not having access to the lowest air fares from a growing number of airlines - because their TMC simply don't support NDC content in a meaningful way - and it appears most buyers are getting very nervous about how they can keep explaining this fact to their travelers and not least their boss. As time goes by, and more and more evidence becomes available showing NDC actually works fine and the problem lies with the TMC and their outdated tech stack - and of course their commercial conflict of interest tied to other income streams - it appears a growing number of buyers will say " See Ya" to their TMC no matter how impressive their list of reasons for why NDC doesn't work might be Finally, the momentum behind a more sustainable travel industry is gathering pace as major decisions were made by politicians around the world - we are rapidly approaching COP28 in Dubai and will probably see a flow of major announcements between now and the end of November - all designed to increase the pressure on aviation in particular to de-carbonize faster than the current 2050 plan I am involved in a number of ways, so just want to highlight Thrust Carbon, ENVEST GLOBAL and Creturner Group AB (Publ) as 3 examples of startups creating new services designed to make it easy for travel buyers to accelerate their sustainable travel program - but there are many other quality players out there, so there is no excuse for a travel buyer to avoid making decisions with a real impact now #timeforgreentravel

“Google Signs Up Shell’s SAF Program to Cut Business Travel Emissions” By Jennifer L - August 17, 2023 “Google has joined a Shell-backed sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) program intended to scale up SAF as part of its stride to be carbon neutral throughout entire operations by 2030.” “The SAF program called Avelia was launched last year by Shell and American Express Global Business Travel (Amex GBT). It allows airlines to sell SAF and corresponding carbon credits to business customers.” “The world’s most popular search engine is the latest multinational corporation to sign up for the SAF and carbon credit program.” “Reducing Aviation’s Carbon Emissions with SAF” “Aviation is one of the sectors that finds it challenging to reduce its carbon footprint and reach net zero emissions. And business travel is a critical customer segment for airlines as it generates 40% of their revenues. It also represents about 15% of global air travel, as per Amex GBT president Andrew Crawley.” “Crawley further noted that having Google onboard their SAF program shows how corporate collaboration can help make travel more sustainable. It can also help ramp up the aviation industry’s transition to net zero.” “Why Avelia?” “Shell and Amex GBT launched the Avelia program with the goal to provide companies with access to SAF and use it to reduce their business travel emissions. The paid premium price will also ramp up the demand for emerging low-carbon biofuels like SAF.” “Avelia is the first blockchain-powered SAF “book and claim” tool built together by Shell Aviation, Accenture, and Energy Web Foundation. The initiative aims to offer 1 million gallons of SAF credits to buyers, equivalent to powering about 15,000 corporate travels from London to New York.” “As Shell Aviation puts it,” “”Avelia aims to jumpstart the SAF market by enabling business travelers and airlines to share the benefits of SAF while each receiving respective credit for the associated carbon emission reductions.”” “SAF is made from renewable and sustainable resources that can be combined with fossil-based jet fuel to slash emissions. As a ‘drop-in’ fuel, airlines can use SAF without the need for modification and it’s currently in use.” “Experts consider SAF as one of the most promising solutions to accelerate the sector’s transition to a low-carbon future.” https://lnkd.in/eiCiinUt Source- original post Read all my posts #MariusPreston #sustainableaviation #sustainableaviationfuel #saf #cleanaviation #aviationfuel #aviationindustry #businesstravel #CarbonEmissions #blockchainpoweredSAF #SAFcredits #lowcarbonfuture

Sustainability and Resiliency Practice & Research | Working with leaders to develop low carbon operations
*Feeling guilty about booking that long-haul flight? Want to know what the travel industry is doing to green itself?* What are the emissions associated with travel and tourism and what are the main players doing? Here are my notes from the World Travel and Tourism Council's Net Zero Roadmap (2021 publication, so a little dated). A study in 2008 estimated Travel Tourism emissions at 5% of global emissions. Aviation carbon emissions represent 17%. Accommodation contributes 6%. Cruise industry accounts for around 0.6%. Tour operators’ emission profiles depend on business model, with asset-light operators having most emissions from Scope 3 and asset-heavy operators from Scope 1. Aviation industry’s emissions mainly come from operations, with 80% directly related to aircraft fuel. TARGET SETTING 42% of leading Travel businesses have climate targets, with 20% using SBTi and 74% using carbon offsetting. 34% of leading accommodation providers have set carbon reduction targets, with 76% establishing interim targets and 24% including both interim and long-term targets. 22% of leading tour operators have set carbon reduction targets, with 64% having interim targets and 36% having both interim and long-term targets. 28 airlines have set carbon reduction targets, with close to 80% defining both interim and long-term targets and including all emission scopes. 84% of cruise lines have decarbonisation targets, with 10% having interim targets and 90% having both interim and long-term commitments. KEY PLAYERS United Airlines targets a 100% reduction in GHG emissions by 2050, achieved through fleet renewal, SAF investments, and DAC technology. Carnival Corporation aims to be carbon neutral by 2050, with a 40% reduction in carbon rate per ALBD by 2030, using LNG and cleaner shore power. The Travel Corporation aims to be carbon neutral by 2030 and source 50% of electricity from renewables by 2025, with a 5-point climate action plan. Tulips consortium secured $29.5m to transition to low-carbon mobility at airports, aiming for zero emissions and waste airports by 2030. Booking.com offsets 100% of operational carbon emissions since 2020, working on a Net Zero Roadmap and unified sustainability reporting. CHALLENGES - Challenge in measuring ESG data and ROI from carbon efforts - Lack of financial resources and budget allocation for climate activities - Insufficient regulatory incentives and transparency in upcoming regulations - Difficulty in emission measurement and reporting, especially for Scope 3 emissions - Dependence on local infrastructure for decarbonization efforts - Accommodation providers struggle with emission boundaries and business models - Aviation industry lacks affordable decarbonization solutions and faces a fragmented regulatory landscape - Cruise industry struggles with availability and prioritization of decarbonization solutions -- Connect with me if we share an interest in sustainability

This week's milestone VS100 flight represents one of the most profound attempts by the travel industry to reduce carbon emissions in decades. But sustainability is about more than emissions. It's a complex issue and there are no easy solutions. In our latest blog, we break it down as we ask the question - is sustainable business travel a myth? https://lnkd.in/eCXyC_tF #businesstravel #corporatetravel #sustainability

There's an elephant in the business travel room... Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF) overdependence. I have spoken to many businesses that have an overreliance on SAF to dig them out of their spiralling carbon emissions. Offering up to 80% lower carbon emissions over its lifecycle compared to traditional jet fuel, SAF has rightly gained attention for its potential to significantly reduce the aviation industry's carbon footprint. However, putting all our sustainability eggs in the SAF basket overlooks the nuanced, multi-faceted approach required to truly achieve environmental goals. Here are the facts: - SAF is considerably more expensive than any other jet fuel. - In 2023, the IATA estimated SAF to only consist of 0.18% of all jet fuels, at around 600 million litres. - Every drop of SAF produced has been bought and used. This doesn't include the BILLIONS of litres that have been promised to companies which hasn't even begun to be synthesised. SAF is not THE answer, but it is one of many answers. To build a genuinely sustainable travel program, organizations must look beyond SAF and incorporate a variety of strategies: - Travel Policy Optimisation: Implementing policies that encourage less travel or opting for lower-emission travel modes can significantly reduce your carbon footprint. - Investing in Removal: While reducing emissions is paramount, investing in high-quality carbon removal projects can complement your efforts by balancing out unavoidable emissions. - Technology and Innovation: Embracing technology that helps track and manage travel emissions can provide insights into where reductions can be made. - Educating and Engaging Stakeholders: Educating employees about the importance of sustainability and encouraging greener travel choices can foster a culture of environmental responsibility. #SustainableTravel #BusinessTravel #SAF #SustainabilityLeadership #EcoFriendlyTravel https://lnkd.in/e_DNEesn
