Last week, we hosted our 22nd My Favorite Home art contest at Emma E. Booker Elementary! This heartwarming event has become a tradition, taking place at a local elementary school nearly every year since 1999. Judges from the local community had the tough job of picking winners from the submissions created by the talented students! In addition to a fun day with the students, we also had the opportunity to present a check for $1,500 for the school's art department. Read more about the event on the blog at loom.ly/WEhj3tk!

Do you notice your students getting a little squirrelly before winter break? 🐿️ 🤪 It might not be the best time to launch into a complicated project, but that doesn’t mean you can’t keep students engaged with interesting and fun activities. ✨ 🎨 We asked art teachers around the country for their favorite pre-break projects (clay was a big winner!) and tips for helping kids stay focused. Are you looking for a different high school option this coming year? Is your high school student a gifted & talented musician? Actor? Photographer? Dancer? Animator? Graphic Designer? Artist? Creative writer? Or overall creative? Or does your student WANT to be? We are actively auditioning students for the upcoming year!! What does this mean? Students must audition as part of the enrollment process to enter into a specific program. Singers sing to audition for the choir; musicians play to audition for the band, orchestra, guitar cohort, or piano cohort; actors perform a monologue to audition for theater or film & acting; photographers/ graphic designers/artists/filmographers/creatives submit a portfolio and explain their work to enter into the photography, graphic design, art, filmography, & Creatives programs; etc. After the audition, students complete an interview with the Executive Director and a Board member. When the audition is complete, audition judges decide if the school is a good fit for the student, the student is gifted, or if the student shows promise & potential. The Exec. Director & Board member decide if the student is a good fit for the school in terms of character, career goals, and overall demeanor. If we decide that the student would be successful at PAFANTX, then the Exec. Director sends out an invitation for the student to enroll. The last step of the process is a family interview to ensure that parents have the opportunity to discuss individual goals and aspirations for their student at the school. It is also an opportunity for the Exec. Director to answer any last minute questions or concerns before the enrollment process is complete. Check us out here: https://lnkd.in/gUGuNAcm Do you have additional questions? Let's talk! https://lnkd.in/gTKDeKx5 Are you ready to sign up for auditions? Helping organizations know what works and why in informal education through evaluation and research.
I could not agree more with these teachers and SAAM! Incorporating works of art and arts-based teaching practices into any classroom can be so powerful. Art education is about so much more than drawing or art-making. Teaching students to look through art is so powerful. As one of the teachers in the video says, it helps "strengthen that [visual literacy] muscle." We need that in every subject area. Our team has been seeing evidence of this already in our research into middle school science teachers incorporating artwork and arts-based practices as a way to build data literacy skills. We're only at the mid-point of testing, but our teachers have noticed expansion of students' observational skills, critical thinking about data, questioning, and self-confidence among learners who aren't the usual "science kids." I don't want to call it magic, because it is rooted it a lot of scholarship, theory, training, and careful technique. But... if the magic wand fits, wave it. 🧙♀️ #BuildingInsightsThroughObservations #dataliteracy #artsintegration #vts

Check out this post from one of our recent graduates, Emily Zarse!
I'm over the moon that the amazing Hettie Judah is visiting Bloomington this week! Her book "How Not to Exclude Artist Mothers (and Other Parents)" offers so much support and insight. Stars aligned and The Kinsey along with Arts and Humanities Council is hosting a conversation with Hettie this Friday May 10th 6pm at The Bishop- which is right across the street from my new collaborative exhibit exploring art and mothering with painter Gloria Manzanares. Come out for what is to be an amazing talk and stay after when we'll lead an informal gallery tour of the exhibit "Creative ReProduction" at the John Waldron Arts Center. Talk is 6-7:30pm and tour to follow. Spread the word and check out Hettie's amazing body of work including new book “Acts of Creation”
