While Minnesota has an impressive history of corporate giving, the dollars available to local organizations are becoming harder to access as corporations extend their geographic footprints—and the areas where they give. Companies are also increasingly using employee volunteering as an engagement and team-building activity to counteract some of the impacts of remote working on organizational culture. Unfortunately, the number of nonprofits that can accommodate large volunteer groups for a few hours is limited. Another way to maximize your volunteers' impact? Many companies offer "dollars for doers" programs, which match volunteer hours with financial donations. Giving back to nonprofits and devoting personal time, talent and treasure has been trending down in the last decade. It is a different story in the world of corporate philanthropy. Since 2018, corporate giving and volunteerism is up. According to the Society of Human Resource Management (SHRM), 47% of U.S. companies offered community volunteer programs in 2018, up from 40% in 2014. That percentage is even higher for large companies. The Chief Executives for Corporate Purpose—a global coalition of multibillion-dollar companies—reports that 66% of its member firms offered paid-time-off volunteer programs in 2019, compared with 56% in 2016. Due to the busyness during the Christmas holidays, we decided to have our volunteers IT Teachers' get-together in January. Although not everyone could make it, we did have fun, appreciating the diverse skills and culture we share, whilst forging stronger connections. Why do people volunteer with us? Volunteering is not just about giving your time and skills; it is about appreciating the essence of helping others, bringing a deep sense of gratitude and acknowledgment. At Sovereign House GH, we appreciate the diversity and richness of our communities. By working with volunteers, enhancing confidence and tapping into diverse skills, we gain a deeper understanding of others' experiences. This appreciation fosters empathy, tolerance, and trust for the users, volunteers and the charity. Volunteering brings positive change to others, whilst experiencing personal growth, developing new skills, expanding our knowledge base, building meaningful connections with like-minded individuals, and gaining a sense of purpose. Each individual holds the power to make a difference in their community. It is through these acts of kindness that we truly understand the profound impact we can have on another's life. It's not about how much time you have, it's how you spend it. One of my team members had a goal to volunteer, but couldn't figure out when to do it even with Volunteer Time Off time allowed. I suggested they pick a day, request the time off now and plan to volunteer at that time. This morning, I volunteered at Hope Helps to pack bags of food for local children so they can have food during spring break. We packed 182 bags.
