Women are making history every day. Let's take a moment to acknowledge and celebrate the achievements of women who have broken down barriers and shattered stereotypes. As we honour the month of October as Women’s History Month, we also acknowledge that today, October 18, is also Persons Day in Canada. On October 18, 1929, Canada’s highest court of appeal handed down a historic decision to include women in the legal definition of “persons.” It may be hard to fathom that only three or four generations ago, female children, mothers and grandmothers were not legally “persons” in our country. So much has happened since then! From their strength and intelligence to their compassion and creativity, women are an unstoppable force. Today, we honour the impact of women, their leadership, and all that they do. Take some time to explore Canadian women of impact: https://lnkd.in/emMdEXuZ #WomensHistoryMonth #PersonsDay #GenderEquality

In 2014, Women in Rail ran a study on the UK rail workforce that clearly showed that more needed to be done to increase the number of women within the industry. Since then, numbers have been continually dropping, plummeting to just 14.6% in 2022. Increasing the number of women within any industry starts by showing support to the women already working within that industry, understanding the challenges they face and empowering them to progress towards positions of leadership and become role models for other aspiring women. As we start the new year, it’s a great time for rail organisations to step up to the challenge and offer opportunities to support women and other underrepresented groups within your sector. What opportunities does your organisation offer to support its workforce? Talk to Ollie Thorn and Ayanna Allen to find out more about our Women In Rail programme and how we can help your organisation grow through mentorship. #MovingAhead #Mentorship #RailIndustry

Following #WomensHistoryMonth in October, I want to take a moment to recognize the #diversity, perspectives, and creativity that women bring to the workplace. This article outlines the challenges, experiences, and achievements of five brilliant Canadian women. These stories are a wonderful representation of the work women do every day to break down barriers and pave better paths for the women who will come after them. Without inclusive environments that uphold the voices of women, we would suffer as a workforce, a community, and a country. #WomenInBusiness #RandstadCanada

Women and leadership. This is how it goes when women take action. Not just another demo or a march - but demanding to be a part of the negotiation table. Female voices must be heard.

Pathfinder International’s President for Africa, Lydia Saloucou’s must-read blog. 🌍♀️ ”There’s a lot of talk in development work about women’s and girls’ empowerment and what it all boils down to is making sure all people, irrespective of their gender, can be the ones making the most important decisions in their own lives, and that they have the resources to build the lives they choose. At Pathfinder, we recognize this. And while we know that the future of women and girls depends on them being able to access sexual and reproductive health care, it’s more than that. They need financial resources to manage their lives, those of their families, and have their basic needs met, and they need to be able to make decisions about how those resources are used. It is only then that they can plan for their futures and live to their full potentials—which, in turn, can have monumental positive impact across all of society. In many of the communities where Pathfinder works, women are not focused on health care. In camps for internally displaced people across Burkina Faso, for example, they are wondering where they will live, what they will eat, and how they will send their children to school. To be effective, our programs must be integrated. They must offer essential health services, like contraception and maternal health care, while also responding to things like childhood malnutrition and financial empowerment.”
“It sounds obvious, but unfortunately, it’s not always common practice: When designing programs meant to “empower” women, we must listen to women themselves.” Take a look at our President for Africa Lydia Saloucou’s powerful new blog: https://lnkd.in/eASTc-E3
