Just finished hearing from and being absolutely impressed by President Anthony L. Jenkins of Coppin State University as the winner of this year’s Public Relations Society of America (PRSA) Counselors to Higher Education Advoctae for Higher Education award winner and Patrick Jackson Memorial Lecture keynote. Some of my favorite highlights: — Smart presidents understand it takes a strong leader to share power. It is on a president to make sure the right voices are at the table and that those voices help shape the narrative of the institution. — Building relationships of trust is essential. Communications can help the president find an authentic voice, enhance their voice, or develop their voice. — Today’s president should rely on their comms team more than ever before because of social media. “If you don’t get out in front of that dog, you’ll never catch it.” — Don’t ever downplay or underestimate your expertise. You can be the difference-maker in a president’s tenure. — Be bold. Challenge. Ask questions. Nudge a little bit. Give your president a perspective they may not have.

The Importance Of Getting Stuff Done Thank you Murdoch University Singapore for inviting me to speak with the comms and PR undergraduates at your wonderful campus. I just wanted to share what I said when I was asked what were the skills needed for a successful PR/Comms practitioner. I shared this video, which basically has President Obama saying that the most important trait for young people is to get stuff done. Just do it. Get s**t done and many different varieties. Sure there are other skills, but the one common skill for any executive in any field, is to solve problems and execute the work efficiently. I am 100 per cent with Obama on this. Doesn't matter if you are smartest guy in the room or you have the best charm. When you are starting out, it's all about Getting Stuff Done. And not blaming anyone else when you can't.
