Addiction Economy Thought For Today - importance of 'joined up government'. This is so true across all Addiction Economy areas. You can easily get the Dept for Business giving tax breaks for innovations or new factories, another Dept paying subsidies eg for home grown ingredients of addictive products, another taxing for additional revenue and to put people off, another dismantling regulation to promote usage, with another cracking down on say advertising or promotion for health reasons whilst another is hosting events and lobbying for support home grown businesses! Here from Sheila Gilheany in Ireland asking for a special body for alcohol policy, what about in the UK an 'Addiction Economy' government body which has a multi-stakeholder board and cross fertilises ideas across all the addictive products - alcohol, cigarettes, vapes, unhealthy and ultra-processed foods, opioids, gambling, computer games, social media, crypto-trading. All of which have business models which seek not just to entice their customers but to encourage use beyond the level at which it causes them harm? Happy to put together a discussion group if anyone interested! Thanks Nason Maani for the heads up.
Really glad to see this clear articulation of issues around alcohol from Tony O’Brien in today’s Sunday Indepedent. An uncomfortable topic for some but a devasting issue for many. Points to need for a body similar to Road Safety Authority to take the lead on driving alcohol policy across multiple gov departments. Much incoherence at the moment such as dept of health seeking to reduce alcohol consumption but dept of justice putting forward proposals to extend licensing hours and so increase consumption. More on Alcohol Action’s ideas on this at. https://lnkd.in/esUdXHPg

As we come together to celebrate the end of this year and the beginning of the next, educate yourself and others on the risks of driving while impaired and take steps to stay safe. 🚗🔑 👩🔬 We can start with the science. 🍻 There are no shortcuts to “sobering up” and preparing to drive; a person’s coordination and reaction time are slowed long before they actually show signs of intoxication. ☕ Coffee is not a cure-all. ⏰ Even slowing or stopping drinking an hour or more before planning to drive does not mean the alcohol has “worn off.” Learn more here: https://lnkd.in/dFuBj2Z #NationalImpairedDrivingPreventionMonth #DrunkAndDruggedDrivingPreventionMonth #CFLR #WhenTheresHelpTheresHope

#NDAFW Fast Fact #2 Despite popular belief that drinking coffee or taking a cold shower will sober you up fast, according to SAMHSA, this just isn't true. It can take at least one hour for alcohol to leave the body, and there's no way to speed up the process. #NationalDrugAndAlcoholFactsWeek #KnowTheFacts #FastFact #Fact #MontgomeryCountyAllianceForPrevention #MontCoPA #PreventionHappensHere #Prevention #PAprevention #MontCoPrevention #MAPtoPrevention

Member Spotlight 🌟: Miriam Currey is launching the "100days AlcoholFree" program on Feb. 6. Are you finding it hard to stop drinking alcohol? You're not alone. People make countless attempts a year at quitting drinking alcohol. Very few manage to actually stop. And when they do succeed, it is often on willpower. Is quitting drinking alcohol perceived as a greater burden than the disadvantages of drinking it. What if I tell you that there is another way? What if I tell you that you can stop drinking alcohol without still craving it? Without feeling the need to avoid it. What if you can stop drinking alcohol because the alcohol has released you. Because like everything else in this life, alcohol is energy. And energy can bind itself to people. Without man realizing it 🙌. Would you like to participate in this program?
