The word 'community' is over used. What does it mean to you? Building and participating in communities has been such an important part of my personal growth over the last 12 years; and i'm excited to be part of this one from day one with one my best buds Sam Wilcox. Me and Sam met through a podcast I did (kinda still do, now and then) that shared the highs, the lows and all the learnings of building my first business. Off the back of that podcast we built a community. From that community I've built an incredibly strong support network and my strongest friendships (thank you to every one of you - you know who you are). Getting to spend time with Sam on Saturday mornings, alternating between who mutes the Zoom mic as we chomp on our sausage sandwiches (complete tangent - what sauce do you put on a sausage sarnie?); we'd try and unpack what makes a great community. So I thought I'd take this opportunity to share the my principles of building community. Whether you're an entrepreneur, a brand manager at a DTC apparel business, or an aspiring content creator, understanding how to build community is one of the most important skills in my view. Here are my six principles.. 🌟 Focus on Creating Value: It’s crucial to continuously deliver creative and tangible benefits that meet the needs of members. No exchange of value, non longevity in a community; 🛡️ Foster Authenticity: Create a safe environment where members feel comfortable being their true selves. Authenticity breeds trust and deeper connections; 💬 Encourage Open Communication: Promote an atmosphere where everyone feels free to share ideas, feedback, and challenges without fear of judgment; 🤝 Cultivate Mutual Respect: Respect for diverse viewpoints and backgrounds helps build a supportive and inclusive community; 🔄 Commit to Consistent Engagement: Regular interaction and active participation keep the community dynamic and engaging; 👥 Empower Members: Enable members to take on roles or lead initiatives. This empowerment fosters a sense of ownership and pride in the community. No one person 'owns' a community, it's value is the sum of it's members desire to participate. Brilliant communities, from my experience anyway, focus on depth compared to width. Width is a vanity metric (number of members for example) where depth focusses on meaningful engagements, on value not volume. It's the harder to move the needle on; but as with most things the real value lies in doing the hard things. Lastly, before you go if you've made it this far, don't leave without sharing what you believe makes a great community. I'd love to hear from you in the comments.
