M/E provided design of HVAC, plumbing, fire protection, lighting, and power for the new expansion of the Strong Museum. The project included a new central heating plant, an updated central cooling plant, and upgraded utility service and emergency power system for the entire facility. In this 2018 expansion project, the museum was provided more storage space for collections, new exhibits and classrooms, and a new home for the World Video Game Hall of Fame and its Women in Games Initiative. M/E is honored to contribute to this world-renowned attraction! #mechanicalengineering #electricalengineering #mepengineering #strongmuseum #museumofplay #rochesterny #expansion

As the way we work has evolved in the aftermath of the pandemic, the places where we collaborate have become more important than ever. We designed our own east coast studios under a design philosophy of "radical reduction," to leverage daylight, mobility, air quality, and healthy materials with strong acoustics to enhance staff well-being while also reducing carbon emissions. "In both the Washington, D.C. and New York offices, natural light was the driving force in the planning process," writes Architect Charles Harris in The Architect's Newspaper. "Making natural light the 'protagonist' in our space required careful selection of lighting and shading systems to manage daylight. In line with our goal of radical reduction, we utilized automated controls from Lutron Electronics to constantly adjust light levels and shade positions. The result is a smart system that automatically reacts to the sun’s movement across the sky—minimizing artificial light and maximizing natural light." Flashback to Tana Suspension Bridge, Norway... The vision for this project was to achieve a lighting design that would transform the bridge into an internationally recognised landmark that the entire nation could be proud of. The harsh weather conditions in the region were certainly an important consideration in selecting the lighting fixtures and controllers. The backbone of the project is a Pharos LPC 4 which provides up to 2,048 channels of eDMX, including 1,024 channels of local DMX. The scheme consists of two DMX outputs on the LPC 4 and two DMX outputs from an Artistic Licence artLynx Duo, powered and connected by a Pharos PoE Switch. The LPC’s compact form factor and minimal power requirements make it suitable for installation anywhere – including in weatherproof enclosures, perfect for the arctic conditions on the bridge throughout most of the year. Due to the extreme remoteness of the location, the LPC 4 is connected to Pharos Cloud, making programming more accessible. An additional day this leap year leads us to an additional case study this time from Joseph Baggaley, our Building Acoustics lead and Facade expert. INTERNATIONAL WAY, STRATFORD We were commissioned by STATICUS UAB to review the performance of the proposed façade specification for the mixed-use development project at International Way, Stratford in London. The purpose of our review was to demonstrate compliance with the Client and Design Team project acoustic requirements or indicate necessary measures to rectify non-compliance risks. Another example of our growing collaboration with Staticus which started in 2019. Hush A-Z of Building Acoustics… E – Echo The echo phenomenon will be familiar to most people. It is most noticeable in places where there is a lot of space between the sound source and the thing that it hits before bouncing back – such as a wall. It is the term used to describe sound that is reflected in a distinct repetition of the original sound. Echoes occur when sound waves are reflected by walls and other hard surfaces and the arrival of the reflected wave is delayed by more than 25 milliseconds, making the delayed sound noticeable. It is different to reverberation which describes multiple reflections of a sound wave. Echoes can impact on the acoustic conditions inside rooms used by multiple people at the same time, such as school classrooms and open plan offices. This issue, however, can be addressed by increasing the amount of sound absorption in a room, such as by installing wall or ceiling mounted absorber panels. Read more about sound absorber panels here: https://lnkd.in/e3x6MAzM #acousticsolutions #acousticdesign #acousticpanels #acousticconsultant #acoustictreatment #soundproofing #soundproof #renovationproject #buildingregulations #buildingregs #refurbishment #renovation #buildingconstruction #soundinsulation #acousticsolution #acousticinsulation #buildingrestoration
