Never Retire A few years ago, I tried to retire super early and well ahead of any usual and customary plan. There were reasons. Some of my thinking was driven by the fact that neither of my parents lived beyond the age of 57. They never got to retire at all, so I would do it super early. Some of my thinking was driven by circumstance. I had a family situation that I felt needed my full attention. Some of my thinking was enabled by prior financial success. Now, a few years later, I have come to appreciate the idea of never retiring. Ok, never might be a little strong, but retiring super late is now my new goal. Why? Because a few years of super early retirement gave me new insights into what makes me, and perhaps all people, happy. During my super early retirement experiment I wrote a book where I share the keys to finding fulfillment. During my book writing journey, I researched centenarians – people who live to 100 or beyond. When asked about their formula for longevity, centenarians often reflect on the same factors. Beyond diet and exercise, centenarians cite having a sense of purpose as a key to longer life. They also cite being part of an active community. And, of course, they acknowledge the importance of having enough resources to meet their needs. Centenarians helped me visualize what I call the Fulfillment Triangle with the three triangle sides defined as purpose, community, and resources. In my super early retirement journey, I was experiencing a deficit in fulfillment. Why? Because working gives me a real sense of purpose – something I lost in no small way when I super early retired. My work colleagues, partners, customers, and clients are my community. Replacing that community at any meaningful scale in my super early retirement experiment was difficult. In short, I was using my own resources to diminish my own fulfillment. I enjoyed many aspects of my temporary and super early retirement experiment and have come to view it as an extended career break. Well rested and with new insights, I am excited for the work ahead as I embrace my career with a new sense of appreciation for the purpose, community, and resources it will provide. I am passionate about what I do – I mean, head over heels, crazy in love with it! Let's be real, though, every day isn't a walk in the park. Sometimes it feels more like a rollercoaster ride, especially juggling a regulated financial advisory business with regular client meetings and childcare responsibilities. But hey, I wouldn't have it any other way! I recently had a client meeting that made me reflect. This gentleman has been with me since the early days of my company, trusting me with his financial journey as he nears retirement. It's incredible how fast time flies, isn't it? We found ourselves strategising once again, this time for his upcoming retirement plans. We dove deep into forecasting and modelling, ensuring he can retire as planned and giving him peace of mind. It's all about answering that burning question: Can I actually retire when I want to? Of course, we can't predict every twist and turn, but we've stress-tested our plans to handle various scenarios. And you know what? The best part of the meeting wasn't crunching numbers – it was discovering how he envisions spending his retirement. I love getting to know my clients on a personal level, asking questions like, "If you retired today, what would you do?" It sparks such engaging conversations, even if they give me funny looks at first! I'm supporting all of my incredible clients in achieving their goals this year, sticking to our plans every step of the way.

For today's #militaryretirement post, I want to discuss leave planning. In your career, you have an opportunity to sell back up to 60 days of leave maximum. If you haven't sold any back so far, or have some left to sell, it's a nice bonus at retirement. You'll want to plan ahead to ensure that you have 60 days at retirement. Going back to our 3 year budget/plan, create a leave worksheet so you know how much leave you can take over the next three years and still have 60 days at retirement. Since most of us love leave, you probably already know how to track your leave. Just in case, simply take your current available leave, add on 2.5 days per month left on active duty, and then subtract 60 days. The number left over is the number of days you can use until you retire. When you sell back leave, you are paid at the daily base pay rate (no allowances or special pay). It's still nice to get! It is paid up to 45 days after you retire, although it seems most people get it right away. Some people end up using leave instead by taking terminal leave. There are some reasons for it, and they are situational. However, plan ahead - better to have leave to sell back or use, than no leave at all! #militarytransition
