The cardboard is out which can only mean one thing... resources are being made! and I might have ordered myself a parcel or two 😅 I've been looking into reasons why schools and settings are hesitant to embrace outdoor learning or forest school and I came across Biltons '12 Challenges of Outdoors' When I implemented forest school in my pre-school I was largely hit by challenge number 3. and 11. Number 3 - Reluctance, staff had become content in their roles and much preferred reading stories whilst being warm inside Number 11- Parents and carers, there was a cultural element which played a large part in my forest school provision and the understand that 'being outside makes your child poorly' So what did I do? I created Hygge baskets that became part of our Forest School equipment, allowing children (and staff) to grab a warm blanket, space around the fire, lay in the hammock and delight in story telling and role play outside 📖✨️ I invited parents to come and join the end of our sessions, allow them to see the wonder and curiosity in their child's face during forest school and spoke to them about the immune boosting properties of mud, fresh air and sunlight ☀️🌳 Full disclosure: this took a lot of time, almost 8 months worth to bring everyone around but it was magic when it happened. Don't expect change to happen over night but you can be that change! I'm interested to hear if anyone else has experienced any challenges to being outdoors and ways that they have overcome this? What Ranger School Taught Me About Being a New Father (if I had attended) Completing Ranger School (if I had gone) was one of the toughest challenges I would have faced, but it would have taught me invaluable lessons that would have profoundly impacted my journey as a new father. 🔹 Resilience: Sleepless nights and constant demands are par for the course in both Ranger School and fatherhood. Ranger School taught me how to push through exhaustion and stay focused on the mission, which is now my family. 🔹 Adaptability: In Ranger School, plans change at a moment’s notice. Similarly, babies have their own schedules and needs. Being flexible and adapting to the unexpected has helped me handle the surprises of parenting with a smile. 🔹 Teamwork: Success in Ranger School depends on strong teamwork, just as raising a child is a team effort. My partner and I approach parenthood as a united front, supporting each other through every challenge. 🔹 Patience: Whether it's waiting for orders or soothing a crying baby, patience is essential. Ranger School reinforced the importance of staying calm and composed, which is crucial when navigating the ups and downs of fatherhood. 🔹 Leadership: Leading by example, staying calm under pressure, and making quick, thoughtful decisions are skills honed in Ranger School that are now guiding me in being a loving, responsible father. Ranger School pushed me to my limits and showed me what I’m capable of.
