With Veterans Day approaching, it is a way for us to honor and express gratitude to all the men and women who served in our armed forces. Many service members are reluctant to talk about their experiences once they return to civilian life. Sometimes the memories are too difficult, and veterans want to shield their families from the pain they experienced. They also might fear the reaction. As heavy as the stories might be, they contain important lessons about the power of sacrifice, camaraderie, and national unity during a difficult time. Here are some questions to begin the conversation. (When asking questions, it's important to be respectful and mindful of potential sensitivities, and ready to listen without judgment.) The New York Health Foundation is hosting a webinar on Tuesday, January 23 from 10:00am-11:00am to discuss the recent findings from the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs, which revealed an increase in #veteran suicides nationwide in 2021, continuing a trend that began at the turn of the century. Although New York State, home to nearly 600,000 military veterans, has one of the lowest veteran #suicide rates in the nation, suicide remains a persistent challenge. New York veterans die by suicide at a rate nearly 2x as high as civilians. Younger veterans are at especially high risk; they consistently experience the highest rates of suicide within the State. Visit the link below to register and join the conversation about trends in veteran suicide in New York and nationally; the role of firearms; and promising solutions deployed in New York State that may serve as a guide for others to replicate. We are proud to announce that Quick Release_ has signed the Armed Forces Covenant. This is another step in our ongoing commitment to honor and support the Armed Forces Community. The Armed Forces Covenant is a pledge to recognize the immense sacrifices and contributions of service personnel—both regular and reservist, veterans, and their families. These individuals have played a crucial role not just in our organization but across our communities. Our Pledges: ➡️ Promoting the Armed Forces: Enhancing awareness and understanding of the Armed Forces within our community and organization. ➡️ Employment Support: Offering tailored employment opportunities and adjustments to suit the unique needs of Armed Forces members. ➡️ Health, Housing, and Education: Ensuring accessible and quality services to improve the quality of life for our Armed Forces community. By signing this covenant, we vow to uphold its principles, ensuring that no member of the Armed Forces faces disadvantage in accessing our services compared to other citizens. In some cases, special considerations may be warranted, particularly for those who have given the most, like the injured or bereaved. Did you know #veterans of the U.S. Armed Services and #GoldStar Families can obtain a free lifetime pass to more than 2,000 federal recreation sites? Veterans can present one of four forms of acceptable ID (Department of Defense ID Card, Veteran Health ID (VHIC), Veteran ID Card, or veteran’s designation on a state-issued US driver’s license or ID card) at participating federal recreation areas that normally charge an entrance fee. Gold Star Families can obtain information, self-certify they qualify, and download a voucher on NPS.gov Every year, the #NationalParkService offers free entry for all visitors on #VeteransDay (November 11). In addition to the fee waiver, national parks will offer programs, hikes, and other activities. Many national parks have direct connections to the American #military—dozens of battlefields, military parks, and historic sites commemorate and honor the service of American veterans. In addition, every national park is part of our collective identity that defines who we are and where we came from as a nation. They are tactile reminders of the values, the ideals, and the freedoms that our veterans protect. Learn more at: https://lnkd.in/dhJs6jh

On November 11th, 1918 at 1100, a ceasefire agreement between the Allied forces and Germany was signed, and in 1919 the first Armistice Day was celebrated not only by the United States, but also Great Britain and France. Long after the Armistice, and ending of World War 1, Raymond Weeks, a veteran of World War II organized the first "National Veterans Day" to be held on November 11th 1947 in Birmingham, Alabama starting the transition from Armistice Day to what is now known as Veterans Day. In 1954, the word "Armistice" was replaced with "Veterans" making Veterans Day the official holiday. Over the years the day of observance changed, but in 1978 Congress passed law solidifying the day of observance as November 11th. Our modern-day military is an all-volunteer force, a population of men and women who raised their right hand and swore to protect this country putting their lives on the line to protect the freedoms we enjoy today. Per the Census Bureau in 2022, there are 16,200,322 veterans in the United States with another roughly 170,000 active duty, and roughly 450,000 guard or reserve troops currently serving. Regardless of if, or how you celebrate the holiday, take a moment with your family to reflect on the sacrifices made by those who have served or are currently serving across the world. "Let us solemnly remember the sacrifices of those who fought so valiantly, on the seas, in the air, and on foreign shores, to preserve our heritage of freedom.” - Dwight D. Eisenhower, 34th President of the United States Pictured below, Robert O. Watson (Grandfather), Robert D. Watson (Father) Justin Watson (Brother) and Me.
