Our Sustainability and Mobility Department was honored today for its innovative Zero Emissions Municipal Buildings and Operations Policy (ZEMBOP) at the 2024 Better Buildings, Better Plants Summit in Washington, D.C. The City received the Better Practice Award from the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE). This competitive nationwide award recognizes #SanDiego’s success in implementing energy efficiency and decarbonization practices: https://lnkd.in/gsuB_K7W San Diego’s ZEMBOP project was selected for its efforts to meet the City’s ambitious #ClimateActionPlan targets. Among them, the City has: 🔹 Established a goal of zero emissions in all municipal buildings by 2035. 🔹 Set a target to remove natural gas from 50% of municipal facilities by 2030 and all municipal facilities by 2035. 🔹 Made plans to transition all of its municipal fleet vehicles to zero emissions vehicles by 2035.

“We built this shared energy system for this neighborhood, and we did something that really starts to transform the way energy moves and is shared not just between buildings but between buildings, between neighbors, between infrastructure, and between the grid.” Powering the South Landing campus in Spokane, WA is an all-electric central energy plant that has transformed it into a shared-energy EcoDistrict. McKinstry performed more than 40,000 energy models to design the EcoDistrict and deliver grid-optimal operations. South Landing stands as an example of what’s possible in transforming our built environment; proving zero-energy and zero-carbon buildings are possible in any market at zero cost premium. https://lnkd.in/gmDfSEr6

Decarbonisation is happening! A word after a word after a word is power. Blah-blah-blah turns to action from the new year. Because 2024 will reveal the intensification of decarbonisation efforts in heavy industry. Due to its substantial scale, this endeavor will necessitate redirecting trillions of dollars—initially earmarked for carbon-emitting infrastructure in traditional industries—towards greener capital stock. This is great news, and I'm thrilled to see that several Massachusetts energy providers have achieved this designation. It's important to keep innovation in mind when opponents of electrification argue that the grid isn't ready for a massive wave of electrification. It's true that the current grid would not be able to handle 1 million new EVs tomorrow or entire cities converting to heat pumps from oil and LNG systems. However, we're not relying on the current grid for our future needs. The future grid will incorporate intelligent distribution, demand management, two-way generation (like vehicle-to-grid), battery storage, and other technologies yet to be developed that will allow far better efficiencies.
