When I first graduated from university a few years ago, I was burdened with the thoughts of writing a CV and securing a job. I felt that my job experience was barely enough to fill half a page, until I spoke with an experienced colleague. It was she who made me realize the wealth of experience I had, which I never valued because I wasn’t paid for it. My mother used to own a poultry, and I was fully involved in running the business. Right from when the day-old chicks were delivered, up to when they started laying and then, finally sold off as old layers. I was involved in the preparation of the poultry house, the cleaning, feeding, egg collection, sorting, grading, record-keeping and sales of both eggs and chickens. In fact, I was always there with the veterinary doctors whenever they came to vaccinate the chickens. I studied agriculture and still thought I had no experience! Apart from the poultry, my father also had farms. I watched him grow fruits, vegetables, yam, cassava, and maize. My siblings and I regularly followed him to the farms, and we would lend helping hands. We also had nurseries at home, and we would wet the plants morning and evening. I was fully involved in the processing and sales of the farm produce too. My fingers had calluses from shelling maize. I joined the farm workers in peeling cassava. I had comprehensive knowledge of the garri-making process, and I actively contributed to packaging and delivering the final products to customers. What work have you done that you never counted as experience? Think about it. You probably have several transferable skills that would be useful in your dream role; all you need is a different point of view.
