🤔 Might be a controversial take- but here we go 🤔 People looking for sales jobs are getting lazy.. I get this exact message 5 or 6 times a week. "Hi Matthew, I saw that you are hiring for BDR. Below are the 3 reasons why I believe I am an ideal candidate: 1. $X+ sales & X% quota attainment 2. Coachable, enthusiastic and industrious 3. Action taker. Not afraid of failure Would this be valuable to you? If yes, when can we talk?" I just disqualify people when I see this message now. 🔑 Here’s my advice: - Use frameworks- not templates..Do more than fill in the numbers - Be Authentic: Personalize your messages. Show that you've done your homework about the company and the role. - Make a Connection: Instead of a generic message, try calling, emailing, or crafting a message that resonates on a personal level. - Stand Out: Your first impression is crucial. If for whatever reason the weekend has made you realise that you are in the wrong role and ready to start looking. Having been in sales myself, I found these tips useful when I was looking for a new position: - Look beyond £££ - Understand the company's plans - Ask about career progression - Clarify comms structure BEFORE joining - Try and get a sense of the culture, ask to visit the offices (if applicable) - Have a look at other people in the team, what has their career looked like in the business i.e. SDR > Senior SDR > AE - Check out glassdoor - Clarify average deal size, target and how many of the team are achieving Happy to chat to anyone that may be looking for some guidance! Lets talk about "THE profile" every hiring manager looks for when hiring... ���     Focusing this on more SDR / BDR hires for all of my network!   Everyone defines success differently & has different hiring preferences: Sporty, Working background, Education background, Personal traits, Drivers etc..   Touching on our recent Strive podcast with Jeremy & Adam, I have attached a little snippet where they speak about what makes a great SDR and what personally has been successful for him.   A sporting background is always a big win for any hiring manager... it shows competitiveness & drive in my opinion. However, it was interesting to hear that individual sports such as tennis, golf, swimming etc is correlated with success.   Sports in general, but specifically individual sports allows you to focus on improving your own performance, overcoming personal weaknesses and working towards your own goals.   Something else to touch on is; Did they work alongside education? Achievements so far? Previous work experience? Hobbies?   As Jeremy also mentioned... How to fix the hardest part of the job hunt. Translating your experience to a hiring manager so you get hired. Translating what you do now in to terms that make sense to a hiring manager in tech sales is a huge challenge for most people trying to break in. The real problem is you don’t know exactly what experience is most valuable to a hiring manager in tech sales. What everyone says is you don’t have sales experience. But, how is it then, that people every year with no experience break in and go on to perform extremely well in year 1 and beyond? Sales experience (or the profession of strategic sales) is nothing more than a conglomerate of other skills, when put together, make up someone who is really good at strategic sales. So if the profession of strategic sales is a conglomerate of other skills - what are those other skills? I’ll give you an example. Communication skills. Decision making skills. Leadership skills. Forecasting skills. Teaching skills. Negotitation skills. Getting customers to agree to have you solve their problems and paying you for it. When you put all these together you have the ingredients of what most successful sales people are made of (I’m sure I’m missing some things). ————- In summary: Break it down to basic skills. Come up with a plan to develop the skills you lack Or!!! Compensate for them by leveraging the high value of your other skills. #InTheArena #ClosedWon
