Sam Barnett spent the week in Washington DC meeting with the Administration for Children and Families to understand upcoming opportunities to work together with our iParametrics Disaster Case Management and Recovery team. This update session was a great forum for us to learn more about what the ACF does and what their needs are in the coming months and years that we can help meet. We are excited to grow this partnership and learn more about supporting this important agency! #ACF #advancedplanningbrief #WashingtonDC #federalgovernment #supportingfamilies #supportincommunities #disastercasemanagement #disasterrecovery #disasterresponse #emergencymanagement

Disasters affect people. Responses should be tailored to fit their needs. But after a disaster, the most vulnerable individuals, children, families, and communities often have increased challenges on their road to recover. The Administration for Children and Families, or ACF, supports vulnerable children, individuals, and families through its diverse human services programs and grants. That’s why ACF believes human services are essential for supporting people before, during, and after a disaster. In our 2nd post, we’re introducing you to Disaster Human Services. It’s the bridge between emergency management and human services programs, and a key mission of the Office of Human Services Emergency Preparedness and Response (OHSEPR). The new OHSPER video explains how focusing on Disaster Human Services during preparedness, response, and recovery planning and operations can make sure the most vulnerable receive the right services at the right time. With law enforcement agencies around the world looking to make the best use of volunteers, Policing Insight’s Andrew Staniforth looks at a EU new report by a group of research projects which has identified a range of measures to leverage the maximum potential from community volunteers in responding to and recovering from major disasters. ❝The awareness of citizens and local authorities in relation to disaster response and recovery often seems some distance removed from strategic policy frameworks.❞ ❝It also acknowledges that strengthening societal resilience to disasters requires investment by authorities at operational, strategic, and policy levels to improve engagement with citizens and integrate inclusive communication processes.❞ ❝To maximise the role of volunteers during disasters, the SRC report recommends that senior leaders must regularly review and revise disaster and crisis management doctrines to better leverage spontaneous contributions from the community.❞ ❝In the wake of an ever-changing disaster risk landscape, communities must strengthen their capacity to resist, absorb, accommodate, transform, and recover from the effects of disasters as swiftly and efficiently as possible.❞ [SUBSCRIBER ARTICLE] https://lnkd.in/eJrfwwTe #lawenforcement #policing #police #volunteers #disasters

Today is International Day for Disaster Risk Reduction, what a perfect time to spotlight the crucial role young people play in this space! We continuously hear about the impact disasters have on young people, but also of the resilience and passion young people have to build back better. Some quick facts: - 1 in 4 children live in conflict or disaster-stricken countries - In 2018, there were 31 million displaced children globally and finally - 60% of young people believe their views are ignored when it comes to important decision being made. If you haven't already, check out the United Nations Office for Disaster Risk Reduction (UNDRR) page spotlighting the importance of engaging children and youth on the frontline of disaster risk reduction and resilience. On this page are guidelines, videos and podcast resources.
Congratulations to the winner of the 2023 #DisasterChallenge: LYDIA WARDALE with her Youth Guardians program! Lydia's pitch for a youth-led program of preparedness had an impressive emphasis on connection and empowerment of young people, making this a well-deserved win. It was great to see three excellent pitches at the Disaster Challenge Final in Melbourne on the eve of the UN International Day for Disaster Risk Reduction. #DRRDay #BreakTheCycle

“Disasters can be very stressful for those who experience them. Aside from the mental and physical effects of the disaster itself, the aftermath may leave people in need of assistance and resources to get back on their feet quickly. Older adults who experience a disaster can particularly be at a higher risk for economic hardship.” Here are six disaster assistance program for older adults: https://lnkd.in/eMCrX6pk

An excellent piece from Vance Taylor on CNN.com addresses emergency management's continued challenges in preparing for individuals with access and functional needs during crises. Words in a plan are not enough. “Historically, as a nation, we haven’t done a very good job of integrating access and functional needs into the way we plan, prepare, respond to and recover from disasters. For individuals at greatest risk for negative outcomes associated with disasters, the results have been devastating.” #emergencymanagement https://lnkd.in/gSKxbrsG
