When I got into this industry, 25 years ago, never did I dream of working with the list & caliber of talents I did for most of the time at Hyatt Hotels Corporation, Mandarin Oriental Hotel Group , Firmdale Hotels PLC , Dorchester Collection and Langham Hospitality Group {hence I have a Pinterest Album to remind me some time}. The key to it was: to be personal, discreet, trustworthy, accommodating, authentic, make them feel safe and treat them with simple humanity, to always be three steps ahead {because always something else popped up that had higher priority than the previous priority}, to look after the entire crew and not just the talent {because it goes a very long way}, to be there more or less 24/7 and to be that one-stop-shop. It had a lot of benefits, and not only did I travel, got unforgettable rewards and invitations/experiences, learned a lot from the most demanding, creating complex project management situations, working for clients that needed to get the best out of me and the efficiency of and communication to my teams, but nevertheless it combined my hobby of music, film, tv and entertainment with my passion of hospitality & care but it also showed me a side of most of my clients that will stay with me forever. Reposting this because in my many years of working to help end hunger, I have been a major proponent of supporting the hospitality/tourism industry to help address the root cause of hunger; poverty. This is an industry that is most likely to hire folks up from the grip of hunger and poverty. The pushback I get is “these are low paying, entry level jobs”. My answer is always the same: Yes, they are at an entry level, and thankfully, those jobs are there serving that exact purpose. Though the opportunity for advancement in the industry is unsurpassed. And if you ask anyone in a top/management position how they feel about their salary, their answer will be positive. #rhodeislandhospitalityassociation

The guest experience is the job of everyone in the hotel. 🎶 Everybody sells everyday to grow our extended stay 🎶 Thank you Marriott for burning that into my brain. This idea doesn't resonate with the large percentage of hospitality workers on the front lines when it should! In this article Jess Johnson says "Someone coming for a wedding might have a great experience and then go back and recommend it to someone else. We’ve had those scenarios happen, which can lead to really beneficial business opportunities." (I'll post the article in the comments) Every interaction could make the difference in a guest naming your hotel their favorite spot or warning people to never return. How can we communicate this more effectively with our front desk and housekeeping teams?
