Mainframe Modernization and Optimization I still remember my active days of coding work in Mainframe systems (MVS, IMS, DB2, COBOL,PL/1, APS, Rexx, JCL etc.). Starting from 1994, my journey with these solid systems continued till 2002. During the days of Y2K remediation the prophecy of experts was that main frame will go away in a decade. Only decades passed but these systems are still cranking along. Same is the case with Tandem systems, Some Dec systems and IBMi series of boxes. Since I am on the look out for jobs now, I get emails from recruiters for Architect positions for Mainframe Modernization, Optimization and migration to cloud. Some times Job descriptions are very educative and they carry a piece of information on modern trends and the current tools in place. I saw that companies are using tools such as Micofocus and Heirloom product which carry out the equivalent of discovery on mainframe code. Definitely tools are useful to get an estimate of amount of work but they are not fully effective. Relying on tools only without re-engineering code is recipie for disaster or it will strech your project timelines. Since it is legacy it looks daunting to read through codes. However the best value for the modernization dollars is in going through the code and extract and re-engineer the business rules. COBOL codes are easy to decipher and sometimes contain a lot of documentation in themselves if programs were written with discipline and in structured programming. It is prudent to use the existing operations team to help in documenting the system, plan for test cases along with the operations task. They may have time to spare. All batch jobs are covered by reviewing all JCL. One the code is analyzed, we may even rewrite the code or try to map it to any available COTS product. So much of business rules are buried in these codes, the previous efforts have been to always retain them as a blackbox with suitable wrappers and bypass the real executable. Rewriting may be less time consuming and guaranteed to work well. Any disagreement? Would like to hear.
