In the wake of yesterday’s crash that killed Iranian President Ebrahim Raisi, let’s take a minute to talk about helicopter safety. While we don’t yet know exactly what caused the accident, as someone who’s spent my entire career working to make aviation simpler and safer, I know one thing that likely made this particular flight much more dangerous. Iranian state media have reported that the helicopter that crashed in Iran on Sunday in mountain fog – killing the country's president, foreign minister, and seven others – was a Bell 212. A small number of Bell 212s – a twin-engine derivative of the Bell 205 Iroquois/Huey – were supplied to Iran prior to the 1979 Islamic Revolution and at least two of them were converted to carry government leaders as part of the VIP Transport Squadron of the Iranian Air Force. The most important issue was likely the conditions. News reports indicate that the weather was foggy, massively cutting into visibility. Although the Bell 212 could be optioned with an Instrument Flight Rules (IFR) package, a few news outlets have noted that it’s highly likely this particular Bell 212 didn’t have an IFR upgrade. That means that, unlike our IFR-capable Skyryse One, it could only be flown under what are called Visual Flight Rules (VFR), where the weather conditions are clear enough to see the aircraft’s path. If news reports are correct on both weather and capability, the helicopter should not have been flying.

Everyone loves to hate on Boeing these days, but Airbus's fly-by-wire sidesticks don't have force feedback and the plane's behavior radically changes when something goes wrong (in this case, iced pitot tube sensors) and the computers go into "alternate law" modes. Under "normal law", the computer won't let the plane stall. Also, if the captain and first officer push in different directions, it averages the two values and you get a "dual input" voice warning unless one of them pushes the takeover button. A cascade of temporary system degradations led to this horrific crash after a sustained stall the crew didn't identify, causing them to dive steeply into the Atlantic Ocean. The cockpit voice recorder and flight data recorder were both found in good condition, enabling investigators to reconstruct the whole nightmare, and for later pilots to be trained to handle failures like this. Airbus had already issued a notification to replace the pitot tubes with more reliable ones, but this plane was scheduled to be upgraded in Paris, the destination it didn't arrive at.

Exactly 20 years ago, the Concorde supersonic bird ✈ performed its last flight. Some key features of this engineering masterpiece : => Delta wing design with 4 engines => mobile "nose" to facilitate pilots view and aerodinamic performance => 1st prototype flight - 2 mars 1969 => using this plane, the travel time between Paris and New York was only 3h30 (never reached after retirement from service) => supercruise speed 2 Mach (app. 2000 km/h) at 18000 m altitude If you want to learn more about this aviation symbol, I let this link below : #concorde #aviation #supersonic
